OVERVIEW

ABOUT Functional Capacity Evaluations

Functional capacity evaluations help answer one clear thing. What can you safely do right now, and for how long? People ask for an FCE after an injury, a long flare-up, or a tough return to work. You may feel ready in some ways, but unsure in others, especially once a full shift or heavier tasks come back.

At our Gilbert clinic, we run a structured evaluation that matches real job demands. We look at lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, and how you handle standing, walking, and repeated tasks. We also watch how your form holds up as you fatigue. You leave with results you can point to and reference. The report explains your current tolerances in plain terms, with notes that help guide next steps.

BOOKING APPOINTMENTS

Call the clinic or schedule online. Bring any job description, work restrictions, or forms from your employer, insurer, or attorney. Bring your brace or support gear if you use it, plus any work shoes you wear most often.

Most FCEs take one longer visit, since we need enough time to test safely and document each part. We plan breaks so we can measure stamina, not just one strong moment.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We start with your history, your current symptoms, and what your job asks of you day to day. Then we measure strength, movement, and task tolerance with controlled work tests that track consistency over time.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

During an FCE, we do not run a treatment session. We focus on safe testing, coaching on form, and clear documentation of what you can do today, including the point where a task stops being safe.

WE CALL TO CHECK IN

After the visit, we review your results and what they mean for return to work plans and restrictions. If you need therapy next, we can explain what to target based on the findings and what limits showed up during testing.

This is our go to place for all physical therapy! We have been coming here for at least 3 years now for my daughter’s sports injuries from dance. They also do imaging so it is a 1 stop clinic. We have been very pleased with the results but what’s set them apart is the staff. They take their time to explain everything to you, take their time with the therapy and treat you like family. We highly recommend them to everyone we know!

Anyone looking for a PT team look no further. I had an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery mid-September. Physical Therapy was recommended after week 4 post surgery. My journey to find the right fit began and ended at Modern Physical Therapy in Gilbert. I was looking for a ‘team’ that would partner with me so I would receive the best, safest and most effective care/results possible knowing that my recovery would not be easy or a quick fix. My treatments began the beginning of October with Ben and Drey who are great listeners, are extremely accomplished with all types of needs and have been an amazing part of my team. Equally as important are the girls who are at the front desk. The girls are first to welcome you, accommodate your schedules while making appts, and answer any questions you may have with insurance etc. I highly recommend Modern PT and their entire team!!

Modern PT is excellent. They are very supportive and really do a good job with therapy. The whole staff is very kind. They take 1 hour and run on time which I really like. I appreciate their treatments. I feel much better after a hard surgery.

What Are You Experiencing?

Most people don’t come in knowing exactly what treatment they need. What they do know is that something hurts. That’s all we need to start. Fill out this quick form and just tell us how your pain feels. Once we read through it, we’ll give you a call to talk about what might be causing it and what we can do to help.

  LOW  HIGH

SEVERE PAIN

If your pain feels unbearable or you can’t think straight, please don’t wait; call 911 or head to the hospital right away. Get the urgent care first. Once you’re safe, we’ll be here to help with the next steps.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

This is the kind of pain that doesn’t stop you completely, but it makes every day harder. Maybe it’s sharp. Maybe it’s dull and won’t let up. Write down what it feels like. We’ll go over it with you and start figuring out what’s behind it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Even the small stuff matters. A stiff back in the morning, sore joints after work, or little aches that keep showing up are all worth paying attention to. Tell us what you’ve been noticing, and we’ll help you stay on top of it before it gets worse.

Answering Your Questions

Is an FCE the same as a regular therapy visit?
No, an FCE is a testing visit, not a treatment visit. We measure your work capacity with specific tasks and clear scoring. You leave with a report, not an exercise program.
Do you make me lift until I get hurt?
No, we stop before pain or form becomes unsafe. We record the point where the task stops being safe and repeatable. Safety stays the priority the whole time.
What kinds of tasks do you test?
We can test lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, grip work, and position tolerance, like standing or kneeling. If you bring a job description, we match tests to those demands. We also look at repetition and how long you can keep quality form.
What should I wear to the evaluation?
Wear comfortable clothes that you can squat and reach in. Wear closed toe shoes with support so your footing stays stable. If you wear a brace at work, bring it.
Who receives the report?
It depends on who requested the evaluation and what forms you sign. We send it to the requesting party listed on the paperwork, and you can request a copy.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams

Without Advanced Imaging

Your PT

is Operating Blindly.

WHY WE'RE DIFFERENT

CHOOSING THE MODERN WAY

What separates MODERN SPORTS MEDICINE from just about every other company is our physical therapists and orthopedists utlize advanced imaging technology to enable them to SEE what they are doing.  Everyone else is operating blindly.
