OVERVIEW

ABOUT HIP PAIN TREATMENT

Hip pain is sneaky about where it actually comes from. People point to the side of their hip and say arthritis, when the joint itself is perfectly fine and the real trouble is the tissue sitting on top of the bone. Others feel it deep in the groin and blame a pulled muscle, when it's the joint after all.

Where it hurts is the first clue. Deep groin pain usually points at the joint itself, often arthritis or a labral issue. Pain on the outside, tender if you press on it or lie on it, is more often bursitis or irritated tendons. Pain in the buttock frequently traces back to your low back or the deep hip muscles, and anything shooting down the leg means a nerve has gotten involved.

Sorting that out is the whole ballgame, because treating the wrong thing can cost you months. The encouraging part is that most hip pain, whatever the source, improves without surgery. At Modern Medicine of Goodyear, AZ, we pin down what's really going on and build the plan around it.

EXAM & IMAGING

We ask where and when it hurts, test the hip's motion, check which positions bring the pain on, and look at your strength and how you walk. Imaging comes in when it'll change the plan.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

Answering Your Questions

Is my hip pain arthritis?
Maybe, but a lot of what people call hip arthritis turns out to be something else. Arthritis usually shows up as a deep ache in the groin with stiffness, especially in the morning. If your pain sits on the outer hip and it's sore to the touch, that's more likely bursitis or a tendon. Worth checking before you assume.
Why does it hurt worse at night?
Depends on the cause. With bursitis, lying on that side puts direct pressure right where it's inflamed, so it wakes you up. With arthritis, the joint tends to stiffen while you're still and then ache when you shift. A pillow between the knees helps plenty of people either way.
Do I have to give up walking or exercise?
Almost never completely. Shutting down entirely lets the muscles supporting the hip go weak, which usually makes things worse down the road. We'll tell you what to ease off for now and what's safe to keep, so you stay moving without stirring it up.
Will strengthening really help my hip pain?
For most people, yes, and it's the part that makes relief last. A lot of hip pain traces back to muscles that aren't holding the pelvis steady, so the joint or the tissue around it takes more load than it should. Calm the pain without fixing that and it tends to come back in a few months.
When would surgery come up?
Not often. It mainly enters the conversation when the joint is badly worn, the pain is constant, and conservative care has genuinely run its course. Most hip pain never gets there, so starting with the non-surgical route makes sense for nearly everyone.

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
