OVERVIEW
ABOUT VERTEBRAL COMPRESSION FRACTURE
It hardly ever takes a bad fall. Usually it's something small and ordinary. You bend down for a laundry basket, or a sneeze catches you hard, or you step off a curb a little wrong. And then your back just lights up, sharp, and it settles in and won't quit.
For older adults, that can be a vertebral compression fracture. One of the bones in your spine, worn thin over the years, gives way and partly caves in under a load it should've shrugged off. It's the front of the bone that squashes down, which is why some people lose a bit of height or start to round forward as these add up.
Here's the reassuring part. Most of these heal without surgery. At Modern Medicine of Goodyear, AZ, we keep you comfortable and moving safely while the bone knits back, and we dig into why it happened so you're not back here again.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

Answering Your Questions
How long does a compression fracture take to heal?
Most come around over several weeks with the right support. The first days are the roughest by far, then the pain starts easing as the bone settles. We bring movement back in slowly, going by how you're actually feeling instead of some fixed calendar.
Should I stay in bed until it stops hurting?
No, and that's a trap a lot of people fall into. Long stretches flat on your back only weaken the muscle and bone more, and they tend to drag the whole thing out. We help you find that safe middle ground, moving enough to stay strong without pushing it too far.
Why did such a small thing cause a fracture?
Once bone goes fragile from osteoporosis, it really doesn't take much. An everyday bend, a cough, a missed step can be all it takes. That's exactly why we look at your bone health and not just the crack itself, so we can head off the next one.
Will I need surgery?
Most likely not. Most of these settle with conservative care. If the pain stays severe, there are procedures that can shore up the bone, and we'll talk you through those straight if it comes to that. Plenty of people never need to go there.
What can I do to prevent another one?
Bone health is the whole ballgame. We look at your bone density, whether you're getting enough vitamin D and calcium, how steady you are on your feet, and what might trip you up at home. Firming those up is how you keep one fracture from turning into a habit, and it's a big piece of staying on your own two feet.
