OVERVIEW

ABOUT CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

A weak grip that lets a coffee mug slip. Fingers that fall asleep while you're driving. A dull, clumsy feeling in the hand that makes buttoning a shirt harder than it should be. Carpal tunnel builds quietly, and most people put up with it far longer than they need to.

What's behind it is a pinched nerve. The median nerve runs from your forearm into your hand through a narrow channel at the wrist, sharing that space with a crowd of tendons. When the channel gets tight, or the tendons swell, the nerve gets squeezed. That pressure is what you feel as tingling, numbness, and weakness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers.

The encouraging part is that early carpal tunnel usually responds without an operation. At Modern Medicine of Phoenix, AZ, we work to take the load off that nerve and get your hand feeling like yours again.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

Answering Your Questions

Why is it worse at night?
Most of us sleep with our wrists curled up. This is one of the positions that squeezes the nerve even more. That's the reason the numbness and tingling drag you out of sleep. A splint that keeps the wrist straight overnight often makes a real difference.
Can carpal tunnel go away without surgery?
A lot of the time, yes, especially when you catch it early or it's still on the milder side. Splinting, a few habit changes, and some nerve gliding settle plenty of cases down. Surgery tends to be for when the gentle stuff hasn't done the job.
Will a wrist brace from the store work?
It might take the edge off, but the fit and the angle really matter. A brace that holds the wrist in the wrong spot kind of misses the point. We make sure yours keeps the wrist neutral, because that's what actually gets the pressure off the nerve.
What happens if I just ignore it?
Some mild cases hang around without getting worse, but carpal tunnel can creep along and get harder to deal with. Leave it long enough and the nerve can take lasting damage, and then the weakness and numbness are tougher to walk back. Getting it looked at early is the safer bet.
Is it caused by my job?
It can be part of it. Doing the same hand motions all day and keeping the wrist bent both feed it, so your work setup often plays a role. That said, other things like swelling from pregnancy or a health condition can pile on too.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
