OVERVIEW

ABOUT CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Carpal tunnel syndrome comes from the median nerve getting compressed as it passes through a narrow tunnel in your wrist, and that nerve controls feeling in your thumb and most of your fingers. When it's pinched, you get tingling, numbness, and eventually weakness and clumsiness in the hand. Here's what matters most. Carpal tunnel tends to get worse the longer it's left alone, and the early stages respond far better to treatment without surgery than the late ones. So the tingling you're tempted to ignore is exactly the signal to deal with. Our team figures out what's crowding the nerve and works to take the pressure off, mostly through conservative care. Caught early enough, that often settles it without an operating room ever coming up.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

Answering Your Questions

Why is it always worse at night?

Many people sleep with their wrists curled, which crowds the tunnel and compresses the nerve for hours. That's why night tingling and waking up with a numb hand are such common early signs. A night splint that keeps the wrist neutral often makes a real difference.

Can carpal tunnel go away without surgery?

Often, especially when caught early. Splinting, activity changes, nerve glides, and addressing contributing tightness relieve a lot of early and moderate cases. Surgery becomes the consideration mainly for advanced cases with constant numbness or muscle weakness that conservative care hasn't resolved.

Is it caused by typing?

Typing can contribute, but it's rarely the whole story. Any repetitive hand and wrist use, awkward wrist positions, or swelling in the area can crowd the nerve. We look at your specific activities and positions to find what's actually aggravating it.

How do I know if it's getting serious?

The warning signs are numbness that's constant rather than occasional, weakness in the hand, dropping things, or trouble with fine tasks like buttons. Those suggest the nerve is more affected, and they're a reason to get seen sooner rather than later.

Will I need to stop the activity causing it?

Not necessarily stop, but often modify. Small changes to how you position your wrist, how long you go without a break, or how you set up your workspace can take real pressure off the nerve without giving up the activity entirely.

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
