OVERVIEW
Your knee has a rough job. It takes on several times your body weight with every single step you take; it's got to stay steady while still letting you bend and move freely, and it sits right between two long bones that multiply whatever force comes through it.
So it's not exactly shocking that the cartilage wears thin eventually. Once it does, the surfaces grind instead of gliding, and you get the ache, the stiffness first thing in the morning, and stairs becoming something you approach with a plan.
What does surprise people is how loosely that wear lines up with how much it hurts. Two knees can look nearly the same on imaging while one gets along fine and the other hurts every day. And the difference isn't usually in the picture at all. It's muscle strength, how you move, and how much force that joint is being asked to withstand.
All of which respond to treatment, which is exactly why there's a lot of ground to cover before anybody starts talking about a replacement. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of South East Tucson, AZ, we work on what you can actually change.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

Answering Your Questions
Why does my knee ache before a weather change?
Tons of people report this, and shifting barometric pressure is the usual explanation you'll hear. Whatever's behind it, it's a real pattern for a lot of folks, and it doesn't mean your joint is getting worse.
Does kneeling damage an arthritic knee further?
Mostly it's just uncomfortable rather than harmful. Direct pressure on the kneecap is no fun with arthritis, but a kneeling pad and shifting around every so often usually make it workable when you need to get down there.
What's the difference between arthritis pain and a meniscus problem?
Arthritis leans toward a deep ache with morning stiffness that loosens as you move. A meniscus tear brings more catching, swelling after you've been active, and soreness along the joint line. Plenty of people have both going on.
Will losing weight help my knees?
It can, since your knee takes several times your body weight with every step. That said, strengthening usually gets you relief quicker and makes moving around easier, and everything else tends to follow from there.
Are there activities I should stop entirely?
Hardly ever. Modifying beats eliminating almost every time. Trading some high-impact stuff for lower-impact keeps you moving, and staying active does more for that joint than avoiding it ever will.
