Week 16 Pregnancy

Your Body Is Adapting

This week, baby can begin hearing muffled sounds from the outside world—an incredible reminder of how quickly development happens.

Your body is changing too. Hormones like relaxin continue helping your body prepare for growth, which can sometimes mean your joints and muscles feel different than before pregnancy.

You might notice mild back tightness, hip discomfort, or simply a new awareness of posture. That's common—not because your body is struggling, but because it's adapting.

Baby at Week 16

This week, baby is about the size of an avocado and continuing to grow rapidly. The ears are developing further, allowing baby to begin hearing muffled sounds from outside the womb. While those sounds are still faint, this marks an exciting developmental milestone.

Baby's muscles and bones continue strengthening, and facial expressions are becoming more refined. Growth and development remain steady as baby becomes increasingly active.

Why You Feel So Different Right Now

As pregnancy progresses, relaxin and other hormones continue helping your body adapt to the changes ahead. These hormones support flexibility in connective tissues, joints, and ligaments as your body prepares for growth.

You may begin noticing mild back tightness, hip discomfort, postural changes, or a growing awareness of how your body moves throughout the day. These changes are common as your center of gravity gradually shifts.

Experiencing these sensations does not mean your body is struggling. More often, it reflects the remarkable process of adaptation that pregnancy requires.

Common During Week 16

Mild back tightness
Hip discomfort
Postural changes
Growing belly awareness
Increased appetite
Improved energy for many women
Nasal congestion
Mild round ligament discomfort

Small Things That May Help

If sleep has become less comfortable, try placing a pillow between your knees to support your hips and lower back.

Small adjustments in positioning can sometimes improve comfort and help you get the rest your body needs during this season of growth.

Support During Pregnancy

Pregnancy-focused physical therapy is not only for pain. Many women benefit from support with posture, breathing mechanics, movement strategies, pelvic floor awareness, and overall comfort as pregnancy progresses.

Support Is Strength

Support is not weakness.

Whether it's a pillow for sleep, extra rest, help from loved ones, or guidance from your healthcare team, support is one of the ways strong bodies keep adapting.

Your body is doing important work every day, and giving it what it needs is part of that process.
