OVERVIEW
ABOUT TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS
Trigger point injections treat the stubborn muscle knots that never seem to go away. Patients describe them differently. Some say it feels like a constant cramp buried in the muscle. Others explain it as a small lump that is always sore to the touch, sometimes sending pain into the shoulder, neck, or lower back. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Sun Lakes, AZ, injections are one way to stop the cycle of pain. A fine needle places medication directly into the trigger point. The muscle often twitches, then softens. For some patients, relief happens immediately, for others it may take a day or two. Long-term results usually come when injections are combined with physical therapy.

One injection is rarely enough. Most patients need a series of treatments spread across several weeks. This allows the muscle to relax gradually and makes results more consistent.
DIAGNOSE
EXAM & IMAGING
The process begins with an evaluation. Therapists check for tender spots, restricted motion, and confirm whether injections are the right option for your condition.
TREATMENTS
CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM
Treatment involves inserting a small needle into the knot with a small amount of medication. The goal is to release the contracted muscle fibers.

I highly recommend Modern Physical Therapy in Sun Lakes. Dr. McKenna Brown was my Physical Therapist. She was excellent and when I left, so did the pain I arrived with. Both of her Techs, Laurence and Brayden were great. They all work together like a well oiled machine. It was easy to tell that everyone there, including Jake PT were all good at their jobs. It was always a pleasure to be greeted by Lexi at the front desk. Needless to say I was kind of sorry I had leave but I plan on stopping by to say hello from time to time.

I’ve had such a positive experience here! The entire team is incredibly kind, welcoming, and easy to talk to. They know every patient by name and remember the details of your care. They work together seamlessly to make sure you feel supported, confident, and prepared—both in sessions and at home. They’ve also been super flexible with my work schedule. I was nervous going in based on past PT experiences, but this team completely changed that. Highly recommend!!!!

With the help of Dr. McKenna Brown and her staff, I was able to regain my mobility and get back to my normal routine. She was patient, understanding, and encouraging, and I always felt like she had my best interests at heart. Jake and all the staff are professional, knowledgeable and friendly. I can’t thank them enough for the amazing care they provided.

What Are You Experiencing?
Most people don’t walk in knowing the exact treatment. They just know something hurts. That’s enough. Use the short form to tell us what’s going on, even if it’s just “my back feels tight” or “this pain won’t leave me alone.” Once we get it, we’ll give you a call and talk through what might be happening and how we can help.
LOW HIGH
SEVERE PAIN
If the pain is so strong you can’t think straight, don’t wait. Call 911 or get to the hospital. Your safety comes first. Once that’s handled, we’ll be here to focus on the next steps with you.
MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT
This kind of pain doesn’t always stop your day, but it makes everything harder. Some describe it as sharp, others say it’s dull and always there. However you explain it, just write it down. We’ll use that to start figuring out what’s going on.
MINOR PAINS & ACHES
Little aches may seem easy to ignore, but they add up. A stiff shoulder in the morning, sore feet after work, or that one spot that acts up every now and then, they matter too. Tell us what you’ve noticed, and we’ll help you get ahead of it.

Answering Your Questions
Where are trigger points usually found?
They may appear anywhere on the body, though most typical locations include the neck, the shoulders, and the lower back. Patients also complain of experiencing knots in the legs and on the hips that prevent them from effortlessly rising or stepping. Usually, the knots will restrict movement and keep producing pain.
What is injected into the muscle?
It’s a small dose of medicine that puts the muscle at ease and quiets the inflammation. The actual medicine might be different every time, but the mission is the same every time: to release the spasm and get the blood flowing again so the muscle may mend.
How long will relief last?
Relief may remain for weeks or even months, depending on the individual. A few patients require just a few treatments, whereas others may profit from regular care. Injections accompanied by stretching and strengthening exercises tend to offer longer relief than the use of injections alone.
Do I need to limit my activity after an injection?
Most resume normal activity the same day. Mild soreness is normal for a few days, but it rarely interferes with daily routines.
Is this treatment safe for seniors with other health concerns?
Yes. There is a small needle and a dose of medicine involved in trigger point injections. Extra caution is taken at the clinic to tailor the treatment even amongst the elderly population suffering from illnesses.
"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."
