Trigger point injections are used for muscle knots that do not respond to stretching, massage, or rest. Patients often describe them as hard, tender spots that never seem to release. Sometimes they burn. Sometimes they cause sharp pain that radiates into nearby areas. These knots can show up in the shoulders, neck, lower back, or even the hips. A fine needle is inserted into the knot with a small amount of medication. The muscle may twitch, then relax.

What areas of the body are most commonly treated with trigger point injections?
Trigger points can form almost anywhere, but in Surprise are found mostly in the shoulders, upper back, or hips. These are sites that are apt to tense up with daily posture, stress, or prior injury.
What is the drug given in the injection?
The injection consists of a tiny dose of medicine to make the muscle less tense and less irritable. The medicine may vary in type based on what you need as a patient, but it is always selected for effectiveness as well as safety.
How long does it take for injections to start working?
Certain people feel relief right away, while others experience it over a few days. Duration of relief depends upon how fixed in position the knot is, as well as whether therapy is used.
Should I take a day off when I receive an injection?
Most patients can return to their daily activities on the day of treatment. Mild soreness is normal, but it does not normally interfere with daily activity. At our Surprise clinic location, our therapists educate patients on how to manage the area after treatment.
Are trigger point injections safe in elderly adults?
Yes. Treatment includes a fine needle and a minimal amount of medicine. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Surprise, AZ, particular care is taken with senior patients so that treatment is safe and effective, even for patients with chronic ailments.
