ABOUT TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS
Trigger point injections are for those knots in the muscle that never seem to let go. You can press on them and feel the lump. For some people, it stays sore in one spot, for others, it sends pain into the shoulder, arm, or lower back. It can feel like a cramp that never shuts off. Stretching helps for a few minutes, massage helps for a little longer, but the pain comes back. These spots make simple things harder, like reaching, walking, and even sitting. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Tucson, AZ, injections are one way to calm the muscle down. A thin needle goes into the knot with a small amount of medicine. The muscle might twitch, then soften. Some patients feel the change right away, others feel it over the next couple of days. Results stick better when injections are paired with therapy or exercises.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT
This type of pain will interfere with daily life. Sometimes it’s a sharp, aching type, sometimes it’ll just be a dull sensation. Either way, however, it’s a good idea to pay attention to it. Take note of how it feels, and we can go from there in figuring out what’s going on.

How do I know if I have a trigger point?
You can often feel it as a tender knot or tight band under the skin. Pressing it usually hurts or sends pain somewhere else. In Tucson, patients often point to the shoulders, neck, or low back as problem areas.
