OVERVIEW

ABOUT ROTATOR CUFF TREATMENT

The rotator cuff makes itself known once it stops working right. You can't reach the top shelf without a catch. Sleeping on that side wakes you up. Putting on a jacket sends a sharp reminder that something's wrong. The cuff is four muscles and their tendons deep in the shoulder, holding the joint steady through every move, and when one gets irritated or torn, the whole shoulder feels it. What throws people is assuming a cuff problem means surgery. Most don't. But should it be genuinely needed, we'll say so plainly.

A cuff rarely settles in one visit. At our Chandler clinic, treatment runs across several weeks, giving the shoulder time to calm down and rebuild without getting pushed too hard.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We take your history, watch how the shoulder moves, and test it in specific positions. Imaging comes in when a tear needs confirming. That read pins down which cuff problem you've got.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

Care might mean cuff and shoulder blade strengthening, hands-on work, or posture correction at Modern Medicine of Chandler, AZ. The plan shifts as the shoulder settles and gets stronger.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Answering Your Questions

Does a rotator cuff tear always mean surgery?
No, and this surprises people. Plenty of cuff tears, even some full ones, do well without an operating room. The size, the location, how long it's been there, and what you need the shoulder to do all factor in. At Modern Medicine of Chandler, AZ, conservative care comes first unless the tear clearly needs a procedure.
How do I know if it's a cuff problem or something else?
The pattern gives clues. Cuff trouble usually means pain reaching overhead, weakness lifting the arm, and trouble sleeping on that side. But other shoulder issues look similar, which is why a proper evaluation matters. Testing the shoulder in specific positions sorts out what's actually going on.
Why does my shoulder hurt so much more at night?
Lying on the shoulder loads the irritated cuff tendons in a way that flares them, and there's no movement to distract from the ache. That's why night is often when a cuff problem announces itself, even when daytime feels manageable. It's a classic sign worth getting checked.
How long does rotator cuff recovery take?
It depends on the injury and how long it's been going. Mild irritation can settle in a few weeks. A tear or a long-standing problem takes longer, since strength has to rebuild gradually. The plan adjusts as the shoulder responds, so it keeps matching where you actually are.
Can I keep using my arm during treatment?
Usually yes, with adjustments. Complete rest tends to stiffen and weaken the shoulder, which sets you back. The better path is easing off the movements that flare it while controlled exercise rebuilds the cuff. What to avoid and what to work gets sorted out in your plan.

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
