OVERVIEW

ABOUT KNEE PAIN TREATMENT

Knee pain almost never tells you what it is. That joint sits at the bottom of a long chain, it eats load from every single step you take, and a handful of completely different problems all show up as an ache in more or less the same spot.

A few clues do help. Pain along the inner or outer joint line, with swelling and catching, points toward the meniscus. A deep ache with morning stiffness that loosens up once you get going sounds more like arthritis. Pain around or under the kneecap, worse on stairs and after you've been sitting a while, is a different animal altogether. And pain that showed up with a specific twist or a pop usually means something structural let go.

Here's the part that catches most people off guard, though. A lot of knee pain traces back to weak hips or sloppy movement mechanics rather than anything wrong with the knee itself. The knee just ends up absorbing what should have been handled further up the chain.

This is a big reason most knee pain gets better without surgery. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of East Mesa, AZ, we figure out what's really generating it and go after that.

Eric and his staff were awesome. I'm 71 years old and still very athletic. They did a fantastic job getting me back to the sports I love. I think they are the best physical therapy place in Phoenix

These people are wonderful. I had A fall down some stairs and had trouble with movement in my right knee. Hey they did a complete evaluation and then came up with a plan that worked me hard enough for progress but didn’t leave me sore. I started being able to bend my knee 90 degrees and after five weeks we were at 115 degrees! I highly recommend their friendly knowledgeable staff.

Answering Your Questions

Why does my knee hurt going down stairs more than up?

Going down loads it harder, because your quad has to control your body weight against gravity the whole way. Weak quads and that's exactly where you'll feel it first. It's one of the clearest signs that strengthening is going to help you.

My knee swells the day after activity, is that normal?

It's a common pattern, and it's worth getting looked at. That delayed puffiness usually means something inside the joint got stirred up, often the meniscus or arthritic surfaces. Settling that swelling is one of the first things we tackle.

What do my hips have to do with my knee?

More than you'd think. Weak hips let the knee drift inward when you walk, squat, or climb stairs, and that inward drift piles stress right onto the joint. Strengthening up top often clears up pain down below.

Should I stop exercising until it settles?

Usually not completely. Shutting down entirely lets the muscles your knee depends on go soft, and that tends to make everything worse. We'll tell you what to back off and what's fine, so you keep moving without stirring it up.

Do I need an MRI to sort this out?

Often not. A good hands-on exam tells us a lot about what's going on in there. Imaging comes in when the picture isn't clear, or when it would genuinely change the plan, rather than just by default.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN PHYSICAL THERAPY & SPORTS MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
