OVERVIEW
ABOUT SCIATICA TREATMENT
Did you know that sciatica the pain and the problem are in different places. Your leg burns, but the trouble is sitting up in your lower back or pelvis. That's because the sciatic nerve runs the whole distance, from the low back through the buttock and down the back of the leg, so irritation at the top gets reported the entire way down.
Which is why rubbing the sore leg never gets anyone anywhere.
Some describe sharp electric jolts, others a constant burn, and plenty get numbness or pins and needles instead of pain outright. The near-universal complaint is that sitting makes it worse, which turns commutes and desk work into something you dread.
What's irritating the nerve varies too. A disc pressing on the nerve root, narrowing in the spine leaving it less room, or a tight muscle deep in the buttock crowding it. Each wants a somewhat different approach, so that's where we start. At Modern Medicine of Mesa, AZ, we find the source and calm it, and most people get there without surgery.

I was in chronic pain for 6+ months. I saw three different sports medicine physicians with no answers or relief. I started going to Bloom with the expectation of just managing my pain with dry needling. Eric did a few treatments on my shoulder as I requested but I kept coming back. He took a time out and wanted to make sure that nothing was overlooked, so he did an ultrasound. He found a rotator cuff tear, it was overlooked by other providers. I’m finally getting the right treatments and healing. I’m so so grateful that he took the time. This office is wonderful and you feel like family as soon as you walk through the door.

I started seeing Eric in the middle of last year because of a sudden back spasm injury. As an avid runner I wanted to be treated and be able to get back out there on the road again. Eric and his team gave me the confidence and the tools to have me running in 6 weeks. His knowledge and attention to his patients went far beyond what I have received in a long time at other PT facilities. I am now a healthy runner, I know what it takes to keep my body strong, and I can always visit the team when I need to keep a little tweak or get dialed in before the races.

I had never tried, or even heard of, dry needling before, but after Eric treated my elbow, it magically came around in a matter of weeks, after being tight and sore and painful for months post-surgery. I couldn’t believe it! He then turned his attention to areas of my back, hips and legs, and the impact was similarly fantastic! I can’t say enough about the procedure, and Eric’s expertise in it!… In addition to the dry needling, Eric and Frank have put me through and given me a variety of core and functional exercises to help with my strength and stability…

Answering Your Questions
How do I know it's sciatica and not just back pain?
The tell is pain that travels below your knee along a consistent path, usually with tingling or numbness along for the ride. Pain that stays in your back, or stops at the buttock, generally points somewhere else.
Why does sitting make it so much worse?
Sitting puts more pressure on the discs in your low back than standing does, and a slouched chair or reclined car seat compounds it. Fixing how you sit lifts a constant daily irritation off the nerve.
Is it safe to keep exercising?
Usually yes, with guidance on what and how much. Lying still gets you through the worst few days and then leaves you weaker, which makes the next episode easier to trigger. Movement is part of recovery.
Should numbness worry me?
Numbness and tingling are common and usually not alarming on their own. What we want to hear about promptly is genuine weakness in the leg or foot, or any change in bladder or bowel control.
Why does mine keep coming back?
Because episodes often settle on their own while the cause stays put. A weak core, poor mechanics, or a job that loads your spine badly will set up the next one. Addressing that is what makes relief last.
