OVERVIEW

ABOUT ELBOW PAIN

The elbow is a hard-working joint that tends to complain in a few recognizable ways. There's the ache on the outside that flares when you grip something. There's soreness on the inside from repeated throwing or lifting. Some people get swelling and pressure right at the point of the elbow, and some get tingling that runs down into the ring and little fingers.

Each of those points somewhere different. Outer pain usually means the tendons there are overworked, the classic tennis elbow story. Inner pain often means the same thing on the other side, which people call golfer's elbow. Swelling at the tip can mean an irritated bursa, and tingling down the forearm usually means a nerve is getting compressed as it passes the joint.

What they share is that most of them respond to care that doesn't involve surgery, and that pushing through tends to make the recovery longer. At Modern Medicine of Gilbert, AZ, we figure out which problem you actually have and build the plan around it.

This is our go to place for all physical therapy! We have been coming here for at least 3 years now for my daughter’s sports injuries from dance. They also do imaging so it is a 1 stop clinic. We have been very pleased with the results but what’s set them apart is the staff. They take their time to explain everything to you, take their time with the therapy and treat you like family. We highly recommend them to everyone we know!

Anyone looking for a PT team look no further. I had an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery mid-September. Physical Therapy was recommended after week 4 post surgery. My journey to find the right fit began and ended at Modern Physical Therapy in Gilbert. I was looking for a ‘team’ that would partner with me so I would receive the best, safest and most effective care/results possible knowing that my recovery would not be easy or a quick fix. My treatments began the beginning of October with Ben and Drey who are great listeners, are extremely accomplished with all types of needs and have been an amazing part of my team. Equally as important are the girls who are at the front desk. The girls are first to welcome you, accommodate your schedules while making appts, and answer any questions you may have with insurance etc. I highly recommend Modern PT and their entire team!!

Modern PT is excellent. They are very supportive and really do a good job with therapy. The whole staff is very kind. They take 1 hour and run on time which I really like. I appreciate their treatments. I feel much better after a hard surgery.

What Are You Experiencing?

Most people don’t come in knowing exactly what treatment they need. What they do know is that something hurts. That’s all we need to start. Fill out this quick form and just tell us how your pain feels. Once we read through it, we’ll give you a call to talk about what might be causing it and what we can do to help.

SEVERE PAIN

If your pain feels unbearable or you can’t think straight, please don’t wait; call 911 or head to the hospital right away. Get the urgent care first. Once you’re safe, we’ll be here to help with the next steps.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

This is the kind of pain that doesn’t stop you completely, but it makes every day harder. Maybe it’s sharp. Maybe it’s dull and won’t let up. Write down what it feels like. We’ll go over it with you and start figuring out what’s behind it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Even the small stuff matters. A stiff back in the morning, sore joints after work, or little aches that keep showing up are all worth paying attention to. Tell us what you’ve been noticing, and we’ll help you stay on top of it before it gets worse.

Answering Your Questions

Why does my elbow hurt when I never injured it?

There's usually no single moment to blame. It's the gripping, twisting, lifting, throwing, whatever you do over and over, slowly wearing the tendons down until one day they just quit handling a load they used to shrug off. It built up quietly, which is why you can't point to when it started.

Is elbow pain on the inside different from the outside?

Yep, different muscles. The outside is the ones that pull your wrist back. The inside is the ones that curl it forward. Both get there the same way, too much load, but which side is sore changes what we work and what we tell you to lay off for a bit. So it's worth sorting out.

What does tingling in my fingers have to do with my elbow?

There's a nerve that runs right along the inside of your elbow on its way down to the hand, and keeping the joint bent for a long stretch can squeeze it. You don't feel that as elbow pain but as tingling in your ring and little fingers. Totally different problem than a sore tendon, and it needs a different fix.

Should I rest it completely until it stops hurting?

Usually not, and this trips people up. Rest quiets things down, sure, but it leaves the tissue weak, so the second you go back to normal, it flares right back. What works better is backing off whatever aggravates it while slowly loading the area up so it actually gets stronger.

How long does elbow pain take to clear up?

Tendons barely get any blood flow, so they mend slowly. Figure weeks, and a couple of months if yours is stubborn. The steady, gradual work is what turns it around, and skipping the exercises is far and away the number one reason these drag on.

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
