OVERVIEW

ABOUT LABRAL TEAR TREATMENT

A labral tear is one of those injuries people often walk around with for a while before they get it looked at. The pain isn't always constant. It comes and goes depending on what you're doing, and between flare-ups the joint can feel almost normal, which makes it easy to put off.

The labrum is a ring of cartilage that lines the socket of a ball-and-socket joint, either the shoulder or the hip. It deepens the socket, helps hold the ball in place, and cushions the joint as it moves. Tear it and the joint loses some of that stability and smooth motion.

Shoulder labral tears often come from a fall, a hard throw, or years of overhead work. Hip labral tears show up in athletes who pivot and cut, and in people whose hip anatomy puts extra pinch on the labrum over time. Either way, catching and clicking, a deep ache, and a joint that feels unsteady are the usual complaints. At Modern Medicine of Gilbert, AZ, we sort out what's torn and start with care that doesn't jump to surgery.

This is our go to place for all physical therapy! We have been coming here for at least 3 years now for my daughter’s sports injuries from dance. They also do imaging so it is a 1 stop clinic. We have been very pleased with the results but what’s set them apart is the staff. They take their time to explain everything to you, take their time with the therapy and treat you like family. We highly recommend them to everyone we know!

Anyone looking for a PT team look no further. I had an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery mid-September. Physical Therapy was recommended after week 4 post surgery. My journey to find the right fit began and ended at Modern Physical Therapy in Gilbert. I was looking for a ‘team’ that would partner with me so I would receive the best, safest and most effective care/results possible knowing that my recovery would not be easy or a quick fix. My treatments began the beginning of October with Ben and Drey who are great listeners, are extremely accomplished with all types of needs and have been an amazing part of my team. Equally as important are the girls who are at the front desk. The girls are first to welcome you, accommodate your schedules while making appts, and answer any questions you may have with insurance etc. I highly recommend Modern PT and their entire team!!

Modern PT is excellent. They are very supportive and really do a good job with therapy. The whole staff is very kind. They take 1 hour and run on time which I really like. I appreciate their treatments. I feel much better after a hard surgery.

What Are You Experiencing?

Most people don’t come in knowing exactly what treatment they need. What they do know is that something hurts. That’s all we need to start. Fill out this quick form and just tell us how your pain feels. Once we read through it, we’ll give you a call to talk about what might be causing it and what we can do to help.

SEVERE PAIN

If your pain feels unbearable or you can’t think straight, please don’t wait; call 911 or head to the hospital right away. Get the urgent care first. Once you’re safe, we’ll be here to help with the next steps.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

This is the kind of pain that doesn’t stop you completely, but it makes every day harder. Maybe it’s sharp. Maybe it’s dull and won’t let up. Write down what it feels like. We’ll go over it with you and start figuring out what’s behind it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Even the small stuff matters. A stiff back in the morning, sore joints after work, or little aches that keep showing up are all worth paying attention to. Tell us what you’ve been noticing, and we’ll help you stay on top of it before it gets worse.

Answering Your Questions

How do I know if I've torn my labrum?

Honestly, it's tough to call on your own. The usual tells are a deep ache in the joint, catching or clicking with certain movements, and a feeling that the joint isn't quite stable. Trouble is, other things cause that too. We test specific positions that stress the labrum and use imaging when the picture needs clearing up.

Does a labral tear have to be fixed surgically?

Not always, and that surprises people. Plenty of tears settle down once the muscles around the joint get strong enough to take the load off. Surgery tends to come up when the joint keeps catching or giving way, or when conservative work has had a fair run and hasn't helped.

Why does it only hurt sometimes?

Because the labrum only gets stressed in certain positions. Reaching overhead or behind you for a shoulder, deep hip flexion or a hard pivot for a hip. Stay out of those ranges and the joint feels fine, which is exactly why people delay getting it checked.

Can I keep playing my sport with one?

Sometimes, depending on the tear and what your sport asks of the joint. We'll be straight with you about it. Some people get through a season with modified training and good strength work, and some really shouldn't push it. It comes down to your joint and your goals.

Will it get worse if I leave it alone?

It can. A tear that keeps getting caught and pinched can fray further, and a joint that's chronically unstable puts extra wear on the cartilage around it. Getting it evaluated early usually means a simpler plan than waiting until there's more damage in there.

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
