OVERVIEW
ABOUT ROTATOR CUFF TREATMENT
You usually notice the rotator cuff only when it quits cooperating. Reaching for a seatbelt catches you. Washing your hair aches. Roll onto that shoulder at night and it wakes you up. The cuff is four muscles and their tendons deep in the shoulder, holding the joint steady through every move, and once one gets irritated or torn, the whole shoulder pays for it. Here's what trips people up. They assume a cuff problem means surgery. Most of the time it doesn't. We start by figuring out what's actually wrong, since tendonitis, impingement, and a tear each need a different plan. From there it's rebuilding the strength that steadies the joint, freeing up the stiffness, and fixing the mechanics behind it.

A cuff rarely settles in one visit. At our Gilbert clinic, treatment runs across several weeks, giving the shoulder time to calm down and rebuild without being pushed too hard.
DIAGNOSE
EXAM & IMAGING
We take your history, watch how the shoulder moves, and test it in specific positions. Imaging comes in when a tear needs confirming. That read pins down which cuff problem you have.

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM
Care might mean cuff and shoulder blade strengthening, hands-on work, or posture correction at Modern Medicine of Gilbert, AZ. The plan shifts as the shoulder settles and gets stronger.

This is our go to place for all physical therapy! We have been coming here for at least 3 years now for my daughter’s sports injuries from dance. They also do imaging so it is a 1 stop clinic. We have been very pleased with the results but what’s set them apart is the staff. They take their time to explain everything to you, take their time with the therapy and treat you like family. We highly recommend them to everyone we know!

Anyone looking for a PT team look no further. I had an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery mid-September. Physical Therapy was recommended after week 4 post surgery. My journey to find the right fit began and ended at Modern Physical Therapy in Gilbert. I was looking for a ‘team’ that would partner with me so I would receive the best, safest and most effective care/results possible knowing that my recovery would not be easy or a quick fix. My treatments began the beginning of October with Ben and Drey who are great listeners, are extremely accomplished with all types of needs and have been an amazing part of my team. Equally as important are the girls who are at the front desk. The girls are first to welcome you, accommodate your schedules while making appts, and answer any questions you may have with insurance etc. I highly recommend Modern PT and their entire team!!

Modern PT is excellent. They are very supportive and really do a good job with therapy. The whole staff is very kind. They take 1 hour and run on time which I really like. I appreciate their treatments. I feel much better after a hard surgery.

What Are You Experiencing?
Most people don’t come in knowing exactly what treatment they need. What they do know is that something hurts. That’s all we need to start. Fill out this quick form and just tell us how your pain feels. Once we read through it, we’ll give you a call to talk about what might be causing it and what we can do to help.
LOW HIGH
SEVERE PAIN
If your pain feels unbearable or you can’t think straight, please don’t wait; call 911 or head to the hospital right away. Get the urgent care first. Once you’re safe, we’ll be here to help with the next steps.
MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT
This is the kind of pain that doesn’t stop you completely, but it makes every day harder. Maybe it’s sharp. Maybe it’s dull and won’t let up. Write down what it feels like. We’ll go over it with you and start figuring out what’s behind it.
MINOR PAINS & ACHES
Even the small stuff matters. A stiff back in the morning, sore joints after work, or little aches that keep showing up are all worth paying attention to. Tell us what you’ve been noticing, and we’ll help you stay on top of it before it gets worse.

Answering Your Questions
Is surgery the only fix for a torn rotator cuff?
No, and that surprises a lot of people. Plenty of cuff tears, including some full ones, do well without surgery. The size, the location, how long it's been there, and what you need the shoulder to do all factor in.
What are the signs it's a rotator cuff problem?
Common ones are pain reaching overhead, weakness lifting the arm, and an ache that flares when you lie on that shoulder at night. Other shoulder issues can look similar, though, so a proper exam matters.
Why is the pain so much worse when I lie down?
Lying on the shoulder presses on the irritated cuff tendons and flares them, and with nothing else to distract you, the ache stands out. That's why night pain is one of the most common complaints with cuff trouble, even when the daytime feels more manageable.
How long will it take to feel better?
It depends on the problem and how long it's been going. Mild irritation can ease in a few weeks. A tear or a long-standing issue takes longer, since the strength has to rebuild step by step.
Do I have to stop using my arm while it heals?
Usually not entirely. Full rest tends to leave the shoulder stiff and weak, which sets recovery back. The better approach is easing off the specific motions that flare it while controlled exercise rebuilds the cuff. Your plan spells out what to avoid and what to work on.
