OVERVIEW

ABOUT VERTEBRAL COMPRESSION FAILURE

Some people feel a sudden, sharp pain and know right away that something gave. Others just notice their back aching a little more week by week, or catch themselves standing more stooped than they used to. Either one can turn out to be a vertebral compression fracture.

What's going on is that one of the bones in the spine, worn thin over the years, has partly caved in. It's the front of the bone that collapses, and that's why you see people lose a bit of height or start to round forward as these stack up.

The pain usually settles when you lie down and gets sharper when you stand or move. It's rough, no getting around that. But here's the part that helps: most of these heal without surgery. At Modern Medicine of Gilbert, AZ, we keep you comfortable and moving safely while the bone mends, and we dig into why it happened in the first place.

This is our go to place for all physical therapy! We have been coming here for at least 3 years now for my daughter’s sports injuries from dance. They also do imaging so it is a 1 stop clinic. We have been very pleased with the results but what’s set them apart is the staff. They take their time to explain everything to you, take their time with the therapy and treat you like family. We highly recommend them to everyone we know!

Anyone looking for a PT team look no further. I had an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery mid-September. Physical Therapy was recommended after week 4 post surgery. My journey to find the right fit began and ended at Modern Physical Therapy in Gilbert. I was looking for a ‘team’ that would partner with me so I would receive the best, safest and most effective care/results possible knowing that my recovery would not be easy or a quick fix. My treatments began the beginning of October with Ben and Drey who are great listeners, are extremely accomplished with all types of needs and have been an amazing part of my team. Equally as important are the girls who are at the front desk. The girls are first to welcome you, accommodate your schedules while making appts, and answer any questions you may have with insurance etc. I highly recommend Modern PT and their entire team!!

Modern PT is excellent. They are very supportive and really do a good job with therapy. The whole staff is very kind. They take 1 hour and run on time which I really like. I appreciate their treatments. I feel much better after a hard surgery.

What Are You Experiencing?

Most people don’t come in knowing exactly what treatment they need. What they do know is that something hurts. That’s all we need to start. Fill out this quick form and just tell us how your pain feels. Once we read through it, we’ll give you a call to talk about what might be causing it and what we can do to help.

SEVERE PAIN

If your pain feels unbearable or you can’t think straight, please don’t wait; call 911 or head to the hospital right away. Get the urgent care first. Once you’re safe, we’ll be here to help with the next steps.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

This is the kind of pain that doesn’t stop you completely, but it makes every day harder. Maybe it’s sharp. Maybe it’s dull and won’t let up. Write down what it feels like. We’ll go over it with you and start figuring out what’s behind it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Even the small stuff matters. A stiff back in the morning, sore joints after work, or little aches that keep showing up are all worth paying attention to. Tell us what you’ve been noticing, and we’ll help you stay on top of it before it gets worse.

Answering Your Questions

Could I have one and not know it?

Sometimes, honestly, yes. Not every one of these comes with a sudden, dramatic pain. Some just show up as a back that aches a bit more over time, or a slow loss of height and a forward stoop you didn't quite notice happening. If that's been creeping up on you, especially with osteoporosis in the mix, it's worth getting looked at.

Is the pain going to go away?

For most people it does, as the bone heals over several weeks. The early stretch is the worst of it, then it eases off steadily. We stay on top of the pain in the meantime, so you can rest and still get around while the bone knits back together.

Do I need to wear a back brace?

Some people do for a while, just to steady the spine early on, and plenty of people don't. It comes down to the fracture and how you're doing with it. When a brace actually helps, we fit it to you, and we won't keep you in one any longer than you need.

Will this mess with my posture for good?

It can if they add up, since each one that caves at the front tips you a little further forward. That's a big reason we take the bone health seriously after the first one, to protect your posture and your height by heading off the next.

What's in the bone-health plan?

We take a look at your bone density, whether you're getting enough vitamin D and calcium, how steady you are on your feet, and what might trip you up around the house. Shoring all that up is how you keep one fracture from turning into a habit, and it's a big piece of staying on your own.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
