OVERVIEW
ABOUT SCIATICA TREATMENT
Sciatica sounds like a diagnosis, but it's really just a description of what you're feeling. The sciatic nerve starts in your lower back, runs through the buttock, and travels down the back of the leg. When something presses on it or irritates it anywhere along that route, the pain doesn't stay at the source. It fires down the whole path.
That's why a problem in your spine shows up as burning in your calf, and it's also why rubbing the sore leg gets you nowhere.
People describe it differently. Some call it electric, some say burning, some get numbness or tingling instead of pain. What most of them share is that sitting makes it worse, which turns a long drive or a workday at a desk into its own kind of misery.
What's irritating the nerve varies. A disc in the low back pressing on the nerve root, narrowing in the spine, or a tight muscle deep in the buttock crowding the nerve. Sorting out which one you've got matters, because the right approach depends on it. The good news is most sciatica settles without surgery. At Modern Medicine of Mesa, AZ, we find the source and calm it down.

EXAM & IMAGING
We ask how it started and what makes it better or worse, test your movement, strength, and reflexes, and check which positions reproduce the pain. Imaging comes in when it'll change the plan.

Modern Physical therapy helped me so much and I would recommend them to anyone who needs Physical therapy. I had a sharp pain in my right hip. The first visit, after having a detailed conversation and assessment, including an ultrasound to really see what the problem is, Brianne was able to focus on the exact area. I had 12 sessions and I am feeling so much better. My right hip doesn’t have the sharp pain it had previously. She gave me a home exercise program to continue doing on my own so I can continue strengthening the muscles I need to so this problem doesn’t happen again. The staff is so kind and friendly – I always felt comfortable there and cared about!

What Are You Experiencing?
Pain is difficult to articulate, and you don’t need to have the “right” words. Just tell us how you have been feeling it. Use the brief form to tell us in your own words like sharp, dull, or won’t stop. We will then contact you so that we can talk a little bit about what might be happening and how we may be able to help.
LOW HIGH
SEVERE PAIN
If the pain is intolerable, don’t wait. Call 911 or go straight to the hospital. Safety is foremost. Then, after addressing that, we’ll be able to assist you in the next steps toward comfort.
MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT
This kind of pain is not going to keep you from doing things, but it makes daily life difficult. Maybe it hits in bursts, maybe it is always there. Attribute it to the best of your ability. That’s all we need in order to start to understand what is happening.
MINOR PAINS & ACHES
Even small aches matter. That morning stiffness in your lower back, muscle aches in your legs after a day, or that pesky spot you’ve been ignoring. Those are things we want to talk about. Tell us what you’ve been feeling, and we’ll do our best to get ahead of it.

Answering Your Questions
Why does my leg hurt when the problem is in my back?
Because the nerve runs the whole length of it. Something pinches or irritates that nerve up at the spine, and the pain gets reported along its entire route, straight down into your leg. That's why chasing the calf never works. You have to go after what's bothering the nerve at the source.
Should I rest until it goes away?
A little early on, but not for long. Lying still feels like the safe move when your leg is on fire, and overdoing it backfires. The back stiffens up, the supporting muscles fade, and the whole episode drags on longer than it needed to. We'll help you find how much movement actually helps.
Why is sitting the worst?
Sitting loads the discs in your low back more than standing does, and a slouched chair or a tipped-back car seat makes it worse. That's why desk days and long drives are so rough. Fixing how you sit takes a constant daily irritation off the nerve.
Will I need surgery?
Most people don't. The large majority of sciatica settles with conservative care given a fair shot. Surgery comes into the conversation mainly when there's significant weakness, when symptoms keep progressing, or when months of good treatment haven't moved the needle.
How long does it usually take?
It varies with what's causing it. Some cases quiet down in a few weeks, others take a couple of months of steady work. Consistency with the exercises is the thing that speeds it, and we adjust as your symptoms change.
"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."
