OVERVIEW

ABOUT TENNIS ELBOW TREATMENTS

You don't have to play tennis to get tennis elbow, and most people who have it never have. It comes from repeated gripping and wrist motion, which describes a lot of jobs, hobbies, and daily tasks. The pain sits on the outside of the elbow, and it announces itself when you grip something, turn a doorknob, lift a coffee mug, or shake someone's hand. What's happening is that the tendons anchoring your forearm muscles to the elbow have gotten irritated and stopped healing properly. Here's the part that catches people off guard. Resting it feels right, and it does calm things briefly, but rest alone leaves the tendon weak. You go back to normal and the pain returns. Tendons rebuild through controlled loading, not avoidance. Our team figures out what's overloading yours, then builds it back up the way tendons respond.

A cranky elbow tendon rarely settles quickly. At our Mesa clinic, treatment runs across several weeks, giving the tendon time to rebuild without being pushed too hard.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We check your grip strength, how the elbow moves, and which motions reproduce the pain. That read confirms it's tennis elbow and points to what's overloading it.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

Care might mean progressive loading, eccentric strength work, or hands-on therapy at Modern Medicine of Mesa, AZ. The plan shifts as the tendon settles and gets stronger.

This place is great! They offer ultrasound to diagnose. After my ultrasound they set me up with a plan to get better. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable! Highly recommend going here!

I had awesome physical therapy at Modern PT. After tearing my bicep tendon, I needed help and I got it. It is easy to schedule appointments and always on time. Amber, scheduling, Taylor, PT and Nathan…

Modern Physical therapy helped me so much and I would recommend them to anyone who needs Physical therapy. I had a sharp pain in my right hip. The first visit, after having a detailed conversation and assessment, including an ultrasound to really see what the problem is, Brianne was able to focus on the exact area. I had 12 sessions and I am feeling so much better. My right hip doesn’t have the sharp pain it had previously. She gave me a home exercise program to continue doing on my own so I can continue strengthening the muscles I need to so this problem doesn’t happen again. The staff is so kind and friendly – I always felt comfortable there and cared about!

What Are You Experiencing?

Pain is difficult to articulate, and you don’t need to have the “right” words. Just tell us how you have been feeling it. Use the brief form to tell us in your own words like sharp, dull, or won’t stop. We will then contact you so that we can talk a little bit about what might be happening and how we may be able to help.

SEVERE PAIN

If the pain is intolerable, don’t wait. Call 911 or go straight to the hospital. Safety is foremost. Then, after addressing that, we’ll be able to assist you in the next steps toward comfort.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

This kind of pain is not going to keep you from doing things, but it makes daily life difficult. Maybe it hits in bursts, maybe it is always there. Attribute it to the best of your ability. That’s all we need in order to start to understand what is happening.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Even small aches matter. That morning stiffness in your lower back, muscle aches in your legs after a day, or that pesky spot you’ve been ignoring. Those are things we want to talk about. Tell us what you’ve been feeling, and we’ll do our best to get ahead of it.

Answering Your Questions

How is this different from golfer's elbow?
Location, mostly. Tennis elbow affects the tendons on the outside of the elbow, golfer's elbow the inside. Both come from repetitive gripping and wrist motion, and both respond to similar loading-based treatment.
Will a brace or strap fix it?
A strap can take some pressure off the tendon and make daily tasks more tolerable. It's a helpful support, not a cure. The tendon still needs strengthening to actually recover, so a brace works best alongside the loading work rather than in place of it.
Should I stop using my arm completely?
Usually not. Full rest leaves the tendon weak and the elbow stiff, so the pain returns as soon as you resume normal activity. Better to adjust which motions you do and how, while controlled exercise loads the tendon in a way that helps it heal.
Why is it taking so long to get better?
Tendons get very little blood flow, which is exactly what tissue needs to heal quickly. So they're slow by nature. A stubborn case can take months of steady work. That's normal, and sticking with the loading past the point where pain fades is what makes it hold.
What's causing it if I don't play tennis?
Any repeated gripping and wrist motion can do it. Typing and mousing, using tools, lifting at work, gardening, carrying heavy bags. We look at your daily activities to find what's loading the tendon, since changing that is often key to lasting relief.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
