OVERVIEW

ABOUT DRY NEEDLING

The first thing worth clearing up about dry needling is that it isn't acupuncture. The needles look similar, but that's where it ends. Acupuncture comes from traditional Chinese medicine and energy lines. Dry needling is built on muscle anatomy. It targets the tight, knotted spots in a muscle that drive pain, called trigger points, and it goes after them directly. These knots form when a band of muscle fiber clamps down and won't let go. They get tender, they stiffen the area, and they throw pain to other spots, so where it hurts isn't always where the knot is. A thin needle goes straight into that knot, reaching it at a depth no thumb or foam roller gets to. The muscle gives a quick twitch, the band releases, and the tightness and pain it was causing tend to settle. For deep, stubborn muscle pain that hasn't budged for anything else, it's about as direct as treatment gets.

Stubborn knots can take a few sessions to fully release. At our Phoenix clinic, visits are spaced out so the muscle responds between rounds.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We locate the trigger points by feel and check how your pain refers. That keeps the needling aimed at the knots, actually driving it.

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

Answering Your Questions

Is dry needling safe?
In trained hands, yes. The needles are sterile, single-use, and very thin, and the therapist knows the anatomy of where they're working. Some soreness afterward is the most common side effect. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Phoenix, AZ, we go over your history first to make sure it's a good fit for you.
How many sessions will I need?
It varies with how stubborn and long-standing the knots are. Some people feel a big shift in one or two visits. Others need a handful, since deep knots tend to release in stages. The therapist gives you a realistic sense of it after the first session.
Can it help with sports injuries?
Often, yes. A lot of sports problems come with muscle tightness and trigger points that limit movement and feed pain. Releasing those can free up the area and ease the ache, especially alongside the strength and movement work that handles the bigger picture.
I'm not great with needles. Is it bearable?
Most people who dread needles handle it better than they expect. The needle is thin and often barely felt going in. The twitch when it hits the knot is a quick deep cramp that's over in a second. We can start gently and work at a pace you're okay with.
Can I work out after a session?
Light activity is usually fine, but it's smart to skip an intense workout right after, since the muscle can be sore like it would be after a hard session. The therapist will tell you what's reasonable based on what was treated and how you respond.

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
