OVERVIEW
The repair happens in the operating room. The awkward part starts at home. You stand up, and the joint feels unfamiliar. You sit too long, and it stiffens up. You do one normal thing, like a short walk or a few chores, and later you worry because swelling shows up. Post-op rehab gives you a plan so you do not spend your day guessing. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Phoenix, AZ, we help calm swelling, restore safe motion, and rebuild strength that drops quickly when you favor one side. We also watch for protective habits like limping, leaning to the good side, turning a foot out, or holding your breath when you stand. Those patterns can stick and start bothering your back, hips, or neck.

Early visits are often closer together because stiffness and swelling can build fast. As you move better and recover well between sessions, visits usually spread out. We set the pace based on your restrictions and how you feel the next morning.
DIAGNOSE
EXAM & IMAGING
We start with your surgeon’s restrictions, so nothing is a guess. We check swelling, range of motion, muscle control, and basics like walking, stairs, and standing from a chair. Then we talk about what feels hardest at home.
TREATMENTS
CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM
We start where you are today, even if progress looks small at first. Treatment may include gentle motion work, light strengthening, and coaching for braces or slings, stairs, and daily set-ups like getting into the car or finding a workable sleep position.
FOLLOW UP
WE CALL TO CHECK IN
We look at what happens after you leave, not just what happens during the visit. If a grocery run or a longer day on your feet makes swelling jump, we adjust and talk pacing. If you bounce back well, we progress you and move to the next phase.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT
Maybe your pain isn’t keeping you back, but it is making daily living a bit harder than it has to be. If it’s sharp, annoying, or keeps coming back, let us know what you’re dealing with. We can start together to investigate why it’s happening and how we can make it better.
MINOR PAINS & ACHES
Minor aches may not seem significant, but sometimes they are your body’s way of telling you it needs a helping hand. The stiffness, soreness, or occasional pains are great things to bring to our attention. Let us know what you’ve been experiencing, and we’ll point you in the direction of care that prevents small issues from turning into large ones.

Answering Your Questions
Why do I feel stiff after sitting, even if I felt okay earlier?
After surgery, tissues tighten when you stay still, and swelling tends to settle. The first few steps can feel rough, then it eases as you warm up. We work on short movement breaks and the right exercises so you do not feel “locked up” every time you get up.
What are common mistakes that slow recovery?
Most are normal life things, not big dramatic events. Doing too much on a good day. Standing too long while cooking. Walking farther because it felt fine in the moment. Sitting in a low chair that forces awkward movement. Rehab helps you spot these traps early and gives you safer options.
How do you decide when to progress exercises?
We look at your protocol, how clean your movement is, and what happens the next day. If swelling stays controlled and you recover well, we add the next step. If every increase causes a multi-day flare, we adjust and build tolerance first.
When should I call the surgeon right away?
Call if you notice new drainage, increasing redness or warmth, fever, calf pain with swelling, or a sudden change that feels out of proportion. Those issues need medical guidance. Do not wait them out.
"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."
