ABOUT STEROID INJECTIONS

When a joint or tendon area stays irritated, pain can start running your schedule. You skip walks. You avoid stairs. You wake up at night because you can’t find a comfortable position. Steroid injections are sometimes used to calm that inflammation so the area stops feeling so reactive. They don’t rebuild worn cartilage and they don’t repair a tear. Think of them as a way to turn the heat down in one targeted spot. When the inflammation settles, it’s easier to move normally and actually benefit from rehab instead of bracing through every exercise. You’ll start with an evaluation first, then we decide if an injection fits your situation. If you move forward, we time your next steps around your response so you don’t calm things down and then flare again.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We start with your story and a movement exam. We look at what brings symptoms on, like walking, stairs, reaching, sitting, or sleep, and we check how you move during those basics. If you have imaging, we review it, but we don’t treat a report without matching it to your symptoms.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

If a steroid injection makes sense, we coordinate it as part of your plan and pair it with physical therapy. We work on range of motion, strength around the joint, and the way you load the area during real tasks.

FOLLOW UP

WE CALL TO CHECK IN

We check how you feel over the next days and weeks. If relief is limited or short-lived, we adjust the plan and talk through other options. If you improve, we focus on keeping you steady so the flare is less likely to return.

If you are experiencing severe pain that is not intolerable, don’t wait. Call 911 or proceed directly to your nearby hospital. When the emergency is treated, we will then be prepared to work together to assist you in gaining longer-term relief.

Answering Your Questions

What kinds of problems are steroid injections most often used for?

They’re commonly used when inflammation is driving symptoms, like a swollen knee, a painful shoulder that flares with reaching, or a hot, irritated joint that keeps reacting after activity. They can also be used for bursitis or other irritated tissue around a joint.

Will the injection fix the problem on its own?

Usually not. It can calm the irritation, but it won’t rebuild strength or change the way you move. If you go right back to the same load and the same mechanics, the flare can return. That’s why rehab matters after the pain turns down.

What should I do if I feel great for a day and then the pain comes back?

Don’t assume it “failed” right away. Some people feel a quick lift, then a brief return of symptoms before things settle. Also, many people do too much on the first good day. Tell us what happened and when it changed, so we can adjust your pacing and next steps.

Do injections mean I’m trying to avoid surgery?

Not necessarily. Many people try conservative care first because it’s lower risk and often effective. Injections can be part of that, along with therapy and strength work. If symptoms don’t improve or there’s a structural issue that needs surgical input, we’ll talk through that calmly and clearly.

How do I make the benefits last as long as possible?

Use the calmer period to build support. That means doing the mobility and strengthening work, fixing the movement patterns that overload the area, and ramping activity back up in steps.
