OVERVIEW

ABOUT  TENNIS ELBOW TREATMENT

The first visit for tennis elbow should reproduce your pain on purpose. We press on the outer elbow, test your grip, and resist your wrist until we find the exact movement that brings the pain back. Lifting with the palm down and gripping under load are the usual culprits, and we test both. Then we map your whole day, because the tendon takes load from every grip you make, at work and at home, and the task you blame is rarely the only one involved. You do not need to touch a racquet to develop tennis elbow. Tools, lifting, computer work, and hobbies can strain the same tendon.

BOOKING APPOINTMENTS

Once we confirm the pattern, the plan runs in one direction: we reduce the load that keeps aggravating the tendon, then rebuild the strength your forearm has lost. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons reports that 80 to 95% of people with tennis elbow get better with nonsurgical treatment, and that is the care we build here. We add a brace or an injection when it helps you keep up the strengthening work. Your plan should leave you with a forearm that handles the job, the yard, and the gym again, and we hold every treatment to that standard.

REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT

Call (480) 306-6627 to schedule your elbow evaluation. We start by listening: when the pain began, what sets it off, what you have already tried, and whether it costs you sleep. That first conversation separates a gradual overuse problem from an injury that needs a different path, so your exam starts in the right place.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We take your history first, then run focused movement tests. Resisted wrist extension and loaded grip are the checks we use to bring on your familiar pain, and we also screen your neck and nerves for look-alike problems. When the exam leaves a real question open, diagnostic ultrasound is done here on-site.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

Your plan is built around what your evaluation actually shows. We adjust the loads that keep flaring the tendon, then build a graded strengthening progression measured against the exact task you want back. A counterforce strap can quiet the pain during work, but the strap alone does not rebuild strength, so strengthening stays at the center. Dry needling, hands-on therapy, and targeted injections join the plan when they support that progression.

FOLLOW UP

WE CALL TO CHECK IN

We pay attention to how your arm responds between visits, and we call to hear it from you. If a day of yardwork or a long shift flares the elbow, we adjust the load before your next session. If you are progressing well, we add the next step sooner. The plan moves forward when your arm shows it is ready.

What Are You Experiencing?

You don’t need to know the exact name of what’s going on and most people don’t. What matters is how it feels to you. Use the short form to tell us, even if it’s just “my back hurts when I wake up” or “it feels like a sharp pinch.” Once we see it, we’ll give you a call to talk things over and figure out some next steps together.

  LOW  HIGH

SEVERE PAIN

If the pain is so bad you can’t think straight, please stop here and call 911 or go to the hospital. Getting safe is the first step. When you’re ready afterward, we’ll be here to talk about longer-term help.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

This kind of pain might not knock you down, but it makes life harder than it should be. Maybe it’s a stabbing pain when you move a certain way, or maybe it’s a dull ache that just won’t quit. Write it down as best you can. That’s all we need to get started.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Little things add up, too. A stiff neck, sore knees, or that nagging twinge you keep brushing off all matter. Share what you’ve been noticing, and we’ll help you keep it from becoming something bigger.

Answering Your Questions

Do I Need an Injection to Get Better?
We use injections to support the strengthening plan. When pain is blocking your progress, a targeted injection can calm the tendon enough for you to load the arm again and keep building strength. We make that call together at your evaluation, based on what the exam shows and the task you need back.
Can I Get Tennis Elbow Without Playing Tennis?
Yes, you can, because the name describes the elbow, and racquet sports are only one way to overload it. A screwdriver, a heavy pan, or a full day at the keyboard can work the tendon just as hard. Your evaluation sorts out which of your tasks are involved.
Will the Exam Make My Elbow Worse?
The exam uses brief grip and wrist tests to locate the source of your pain. We reproduce the pain for a few seconds so we know which movement and load set it off, and then we build the plan to spare them. You will feel the familiar ache during testing, and it settles quickly. We explain each test before we do it, so you know what is coming.
Do I Need an MRI Before Treatment Starts?
Usually you do not need imaging first. Your history and a focused movement exam often settle the diagnosis, and your plan can start the same visit. We reserve imaging for a real competing question, such as pain after a fall, numbness, or symptoms that travel from the neck.
When Should I Call About Outer-Elbow Pain?
Call when the pain keeps returning, weakens your grip, or changes how you hold tools, lift, or type. Rest can turn the pain down for a while, but strength has to be rebuilt before the elbow holds up under real work. If you have started lifting with the other hand, your elbow is worth an evaluation now, while we can protect the grip you work and play with. Call Modern Medicine of Surprise, AZ at (480) 306-6627, and we will reproduce the pain, find the load, and start rebuilding your grip.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
