OVERVIEW
You bend your finger and it sticks. Then it pops straight with a snap you can feel. Trigger finger does that. It can get bad enough that the finger locks in a bent position, and you end up prying it loose with your other hand.
The problem is a swollen tendon. The tendon that curls your finger runs through a snug tunnel called a sheath. When it gets irritated and puffs up, it stops sliding cleanly and hangs up in that tunnel. That's the snap and the lock you feel.
Some things make it more likely. Repetitive gripping, the kind you get from tools, gardening, or steering wheels. Diabetes raises the odds a lot. So does arthritis. Mornings tend to be the worst, when the finger has stiffened up overnight and the first few bends catch hard.

Answering Your Questions
Will trigger finger go away on its own?
Sometimes a mild case settles with rest and a splint. More often it needs treatment to fully clear, especially once the finger starts locking. Early care usually means simpler care, so it's worth getting on top of before it digs in.
Why is it worse in the morning?
The tendon stiffens overnight while the hand sits still. So the sticking and locking are most obvious with your first few movements. It tends to loosen a bit as you use the hand through the day.
Do I need surgery?
Many people improve without it. Splinting, activity changes, and sometimes an injection clear up a lot of cases. Surgery is there if those don't do the job, but it's not the starting point.
Which fingers does it usually hit?
The thumb, ring, and middle fingers are the common ones, though any finger can be affected. Some people get it in more than one finger over time, especially with diabetes in the mix.
Can I keep using my hand while it heals?
Within reason, yes. We'll flag the motions that aggravate it, like heavy repeated gripping, and show you how to work around them. Total rest isn't the goal. Backing off the triggers while the tendon calms down is.
