OVERVIEW
ABOUT rotator cuff repair
Lifting your arm shouldn't take a wind-up. With a torn rotator cuff, sometimes it does. You reach for a seatbelt and the arm feels weak. There's an ache that runs down the outside of it. And at night, the second you settle onto that side, it wakes you right back up.
So what is the rotator cuff? It's a group of muscles and tendons that hold the ball of your shoulder centered in its socket. That's what lets you lift, reach, and turn the arm without thinking about it. Tear part of it and the shoulder loses that control. Suddenly reaching for a plate on a high shelf is a real effort.
Not every tear lands you in surgery, though. The smaller ones often come around with therapy that builds up the muscles nearby. Bigger tears might need a repair, and then rehab to get the strength back. At Modern Medicine of Tucson, AZ, we sort out which road fits your shoulder and stay with you through it.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

What Are You Experiencing?
You don’t have to have it all figured out by yourself. Most people just know that it hurts, not how to fix it. That’s enough. Fill out this simple form and let us know in your own words how it’s hurting. We’ll take a look and then give you a call in order to take you through what may be happening and how we may be able to help.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT
This type of pain will interfere with daily life. Sometimes it’s a sharp, aching type, sometimes it’ll just be a dull sensation. Either way, however, it’s a good idea to pay attention to it. Take note of how it feels, and we can go from there in figuring out what’s going on.
MINOR PAINS & ACHES
Even tiny aches add up. That sore back, muscle pains, or that pesky hurt you keep postponing do matter and could ruin your day. Let us in on what you’ve noticed, and we’ll collaborate to keep things from escalating.

Answering Your Questions
Do all rotator cuff tears need surgery?
No. The smaller and partial ones often do just fine with therapy that strengthens the muscles around them. Surgery usually gets saved for the bigger tears, or the ones that don't budge with conservative care. We'll help you figure out where yours lands.
How long is recovery after a repair?
It's a slow build, often several months. The tendon has to heal before the strengthening picks up, so we move through it in stages. Push too hard too soon and you can undo the repair, so the timeline isn't us being cautious for no reason.
Why does my shoulder hurt more at night?
Lie on it and you're pressing right on the sore tendons. Plus there's nothing else going on to pull your attention away once the lights are off. That nighttime ache is one of the first things people mention with a cuff problem.
Can I still use my arm during recovery?
Within limits, yes. We'll tell you what's safe at each stage so the shoulder keeps moving without putting the healing tissue at risk. A shoulder that just sits frozen brings its own set of problems, so a little safe motion actually helps.
How do I know if it's a tear or just a strain?
On your own, it's tough to say, since both can ache and feel weak. The tell with a tear is weakness that hangs on when you lift the arm, and it doesn't clear up after a few days of taking it easy. If it's dragging on or the arm feels truly weak, that's your cue to get it checked.
