OVERVIEW
Diagnostic ultrasound is used when pain only shows itself during certain moments. You might move through most of the day without trouble, then feel sharp discomfort when stepping down stairs. A hip may feel fine walking short distances, but tighten after longer strides. A forearm may ache only when gripping something specific. These patterns are hard to explain when exams happen at rest. Diagnostic ultrasound allows providers to see muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints while they are active. Watching tissue move during the exact motion that triggers symptoms often explains why pain appears when it does and disappears just as quickly.
BOOKING APPOINTMENTS
Call the East Mesa office or request an appointment online. The team reviews your concerns ahead of time and lets you know if a diagnostic ultrasound is likely to add useful insight before your visit.

Ultrasound may be used during an initial visit when answers are needed early, or later if symptoms change or progress stalls. Timing depends on what information is missing and how your movement looks that day.
DIAGNOSE
EXAM & IMAGING
Diagnostic ultrasound shows soft tissue responding to movement in real time. A tendon can be seen as it glides. A muscle can be observed as it contracts. A joint can be watched as it moves through a painful range. This matters when symptoms only appear with use and vanish at rest. Seeing tissue under load helps narrow the source instead of guessing.
TREATMENTS
CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM
Clear findings support clearer care. When the involved tissue is identified, physical therapy becomes more precise. Exercises, pacing, and activity limits can be adjusted with confidence, which often reduces frustration and wasted effort.
FOLLOW UP
WE CALL TO CHECK IN
Ultrasound may be used again to compare how tissue behavior changes over time. Subtle improvements in movement often appear before pain fully resolves. Seeing those changes helps guide when to progress the activity and when to slow things down.

I was in chronic pain for 6+ months. I saw three different sports medicine physicians with no answers or relief. I started going to Bloom with the expectation of just managing my pain with dry needling. Eric did a few treatments on my shoulder as I requested but I kept coming back. He took a time out and wanted to make sure that nothing was overlooked, so he did an ultrasound. He found a rotator cuff tear, it was overlooked by other providers. I’m finally getting the right treatments and healing. I’m so so grateful that he took the time. This office is wonderful and you feel like family as soon as you walk through the door.

I started seeing Eric in the middle of last year because of a sudden back spasm injury. As an avid runner I wanted to be treated and be able to get back out there on the road again. Eric and his team gave me the confidence and the tools to have me running in 6 weeks. His knowledge and attention to his patients went far beyond what I have received in a long time at other PT facilities. I am now a healthy runner, I know what it takes to keep my body strong, and I can always visit the team when I need to keep a little tweak or get dialed in before the races.

I had never tried, or even heard of, dry needling before, but after Eric treated my elbow, it magically came around in a matter of weeks, after being tight and sore and painful for months post-surgery. I couldn’t believe it! He then turned his attention to areas of my back, hips and legs, and the impact was similarly fantastic! I can’t say enough about the procedure, and Eric’s expertise in it!… In addition to the dry needling, Eric and Frank have put me through and given me a variety of core and functional exercises to help with my strength and stability…

Answering Your Questions
Why is ultrasound helpful when exams look normal?
Some problems only show up when the body is moving. Ultrasound fills the gap between how you feel at rest and what happens once activity begins.
Can ultrasound explain pain that comes and goes?
Yes. Intermittent pain often relates to how tissue handles load. Ultrasound helps reveal what changes during those moments instead of relying on symptoms alone.
Is ultrasound only for recent injuries?
No. It is commonly used for long standing issues that never had a clear explanation. It can help uncover why something never fully settled.
Will I need to recreate painful movements?
Sometimes. You may be asked to move in a controlled way so tissue response can be observed. This is done carefully and only as tolerated.
What do patients usually gain from ultrasound?
Understanding. When people can see what is happening, the plan feels clearer, expectations feel more realistic, and progress feels easier to measure.
