OVERVIEW

ABOUT DRY NEEDLING

Dry needling works by sliding a very fine, sterile needle straight into a knot that’s sitting tight in the muscle. Those knots, or trigger points, are what often cause soreness, stiffness, or pain that spreads. It might seem like acupuncture to the untrained eye, but there is much more to it. Dry needling is different as it’s built on muscle anatomy and pain response. Many patients notice some relief early on, even within their first few sessions. It’s commonly used for headaches, back or shoulder problems, tendon irritation, and helping athletes recover when muscles just won’t loosen up.

BOOKING APPOINTMENTS

Setting up an appointment is easy. You can call our East Mesa office or schedule online, whichever works best. We’ll make sure you know what to expect before you come in.

A lot of people need more than one session. Usually, it’s spaced out over several weeks, and we’ll lay out a plan that matches your needs.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

Before we start, your therapist checks movement, feels for tight spots, and looks for what’s actually driving the pain. That way, the treatment is specific to you.

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

A fine needle goes into the trigger point itself. You might feel a twitch or a little cramp, but that’s often followed by the muscle letting go.

Orthopedic Experts

I was in chronic pain for 6+ months. I saw three different sports medicine physicians with no answers or relief. I started going to Bloom with the expectation of just managing my pain with dry needling. Eric did a few treatments on my shoulder as I requested but I kept coming back. He took a time out and wanted to make sure that nothing was overlooked, so he did an ultrasound. He found a rotator cuff tear, it was overlooked by other providers. I’m finally getting the right treatments and healing. I’m so so grateful that he took the time. This office is wonderful and you feel like family as soon as you walk through the door.

I started seeing Eric in the middle of last year because of a sudden back spasm injury. As an avid runner I wanted to be treated and be able to get back out there on the road again. Eric and his team gave me the confidence and the tools to have me running in 6 weeks. His knowledge and attention to his patients went far beyond what I have received in a long time at other PT facilities. I am now a healthy runner, I know what it takes to keep my body strong, and I can always visit the team when I need to keep a little tweak or get dialed in before the races.

I had never tried, or even heard of, dry needling before, but after Eric treated my elbow, it magically came around in a matter of weeks, after being tight and sore and painful for months post-surgery. I couldn’t believe it! He then turned his attention to areas of my back, hips and legs, and the impact was similarly fantastic! I can’t say enough about the procedure, and Eric’s expertise in it!… In addition to the dry needling, Eric and Frank have put me through and given me a variety of core and functional exercises to help with my strength and stability…

Answering Your Questions

Does dry needling hurt during treatment?

People describe it differently. Some say it’s a quick sting, others feel a twitch that surprises them, then it eases. Mild soreness after is pretty normal, but it fades within a day or so. Most patients end up saying the relief makes that little sting worth it.

How is dry needling different from acupuncture?

They look alike at first glance, but the reasons behind them are totally different. Acupuncture follows traditional Chinese medicine and focuses on energy lines. Dry needling goes after the muscle knot itself. At our East Mesa clinic, that’s the point: target the problem muscle, not energy flow.

What conditions respond best to dry needling?

We use it a lot for headaches, stiff necks, shoulder pain, and sports injuries. Plantar fasciitis and tendon pain are also common reasons people try it. Pairing it with exercise or stretching usually gives the best long-term results, so the same pain doesn’t just return.

How long does a typical session last?

Sessions are usually short, at around 15 to 30 minutes, but it depends. They’re often added to your physical therapy plan, so you’ll probably do exercises before or after. The mix helps lock in the progress, instead of relying only on the needle treatment itself.

Is dry needling safe at your clinic?

Yes, we use sterile, single-use needles every time, and only licensed therapists perform the treatment. We also explain everything before we begin, and we’re happy to answer questions while you’re here.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
