OVERVIEW

ABOUT ORTHOPEDICS FOR SHOULDER PAIN

Elbow pain has a way of getting into everything your hands do. You go to lift a coffee mug, and a sharp catch runs through the joint. Turn a doorknob and feel it. Shake someone's hand and brace for it. The elbow doesn't get much thought until it starts to hurt. A lot of elbow pain builds from repetition. The same motion at work, on the court, around the house, day after day, until the tendons get cranky and stay that way. Our physical therapists track down what's actually irritated, calm it down, and rebuild the strength in the forearm and around the joint so it stops flaring. There's no set routine everyone runs through. Each plan matches the elbow in front of us.

BOOKING APPOINTMENTS

Setting up a visit is straightforward. Call us or use the online option. Our staff handles the scheduling, answers whatever you're wondering about, and lets you know what to expect before your first appointment.

A cranky elbow rarely settles in one session. At our East Mesa clinic, therapy is spread across several weeks, giving the tendons time to calm down and rebuild without getting pushed too hard.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

Therapists check your grip, how the elbow moves, and what motions set off the pain. That first read keeps the plan aimed at your specific problem instead of a generic routine.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

Care might mean hands-on work to ease the irritated tendons, targeted forearm strengthening, or activity changes at Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of East Mesa, AZ. The plan shifts as the elbow calms down.

Physical Therapy for Elbow Pain

I was in chronic pain for 6+ months. I saw three different sports medicine physicians with no answers or relief. I started going to Bloom with the expectation of just managing my pain with dry needling. Eric did a few treatments on my shoulder as I requested but I kept coming back. He took a time out and wanted to make sure that nothing was overlooked, so he did an ultrasound. He found a rotator cuff tear, it was overlooked by other providers. I’m finally getting the right treatments and healing. I’m so so grateful that he took the time. This office is wonderful and you feel like family as soon as you walk through the door.

Physical Therapy for Elbow Pain

I started seeing Eric in the middle of last year because of a sudden back spasm injury. As an avid runner I wanted to be treated and be able to get back out there on the road again. Eric and his team gave me the confidence and the tools to have me running in 6 weeks. His knowledge and attention to his patients went far beyond what I have received in a long time at other PT facilities. I am now a healthy runner, I know what it takes to keep my body strong, and I can always visit the team when I need to keep a little tweak or get dialed in before the races.

Physical Therapy for Elbow Pain

I had never tried, or even heard of, dry needling before, but after Eric treated my elbow, it magically came around in a matter of weeks, after being tight and sore and painful for months post-surgery. I couldn’t believe it! He then turned his attention to areas of my back, hips and legs, and the impact was similarly fantastic! I can’t say enough about the procedure, and Eric’s expertise in it!… In addition to the dry needling, Eric and Frank have put me through and given me a variety of core and functional exercises to help with my strength and stability…

Answering Your Questions

What's causing the pain on the outside of my elbow?

Often it's tennis elbow, where the tendons on the outer side get irritated from repeated gripping and wrist motion. You don't have to play tennis to get it. The evaluation at Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of East Mesa, AZ, sorts out whether that's what's going on and what's feeding it.

Can therapy help with elbow pain from computer or desk work?

Yes. Long hours typing and mousing keep the forearm muscles working in a tight, repetitive way that irritates the elbow over time. Therapy eases the tight spots and strengthens the forearm so the daily strain stops piling up.

Do I need to stop using my arm completely to heal?

Usually not. Complete rest tends to leave the joint stiff and weak. The better path is adjusting which motions you do and how, while controlled exercise keeps the tendon loading in a way that actually helps it heal.

How long does elbow tendon pain take to settle?

It varies with how long it's been going and how irritated the tendon is. Some people feel a real difference in a few weeks. Stubborn cases take longer, since tendons are slow to heal. The plan adjusts as you go based on how the elbow responds.

Will I get exercises to do at home?

Almost certainly. The forearm strengthening that calms tendon pain works best with steady practice between visits. At our East Mesa clinic, patients usually leave with a few simple moves to keep the progress moving along.

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
