OVERVIEW
Shoulder pain shows up in the parts of your day you stopped noticing. Yanking a shirt off at night. Cracking a window. Lifting a bag of mulch out of the truck bed. Some days it is just an ache. Other days it grabs you the second you move wrong. A pinch reaching across the body. A burn down the outside of the arm. A weak spot you cannot push through. Most people let it ride way too long, hoping a quiet morning shows up. It usually does not. At Modern Medicine of East Mesa, AZ, orthopedic care looks at the joint, the muscles around it, and the moves that keep flaring things up. From there, a plan gets built around what the shoulder is actually doing.

I was in chronic pain for 6+ months. I saw three different sports medicine physicians with no answers or relief. I started going to Bloom with the expectation of just managing my pain with dry needling. Eric did a few treatments on my shoulder as I requested but I kept coming back. He took a time out and wanted to make sure that nothing was overlooked, so he did an ultrasound. He found a rotator cuff tear, it was overlooked by other providers. I’m finally getting the right treatments and healing. I’m so so grateful that he took the time. This office is wonderful and you feel like family as soon as you walk through the door.

I started seeing Eric in the middle of last year because of a sudden back spasm injury. As an avid runner I wanted to be treated and be able to get back out there on the road again. Eric and his team gave me the confidence and the tools to have me running in 6 weeks. His knowledge and attention to his patients went far beyond what I have received in a long time at other PT facilities. I am now a healthy runner, I know what it takes to keep my body strong, and I can always visit the team when I need to keep a little tweak or get dialed in before the races.

I had never tried, or even heard of, dry needling before, but after Eric treated my elbow, it magically came around in a matter of weeks, after being tight and sore and painful for months post-surgery. I couldn’t believe it! He then turned his attention to areas of my back, hips and legs, and the impact was similarly fantastic! I can’t say enough about the procedure, and Eric’s expertise in it!… In addition to the dry needling, Eric and Frank have put me through and given me a variety of core and functional exercises to help with my strength and stability…

Answering Your Questions
What is the difference between a pulled muscle and something bigger?
A pulled muscle calms down in a week or two. Pain stays in one general area. Rest and easy movement help. Anything that hangs on longer, gets worse, or brings weakness or stuck motion is usually more than a strain. That is the line where it makes sense to get the shoulder checked.
Can I lift weights if my shoulder hurts?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Depends on the issue. Overhead pressing is usually the first thing to pause. Pulling work and lighter accessory stuff are often still fine. The visit goes over what to keep, what to tweak, and what to drop for a bit.
Why does my shoulder feel weak even when the pain is gone?
Pain and strength do not always track together. Once the joint has been sore for a while, the muscles around it lose strength without you really noticing. Pain fades. Weakness lingers. That gap is a big reason shoulder pain keeps coming back.
Should I use heat or ice?
New pain or swelling, ice helps. Old, stiff, achy stuff, heat tends to feel better. Some shoulders like both, switching back and forth. Neither one is a fix, but they take the edge off enough to keep moving.
What if I already had a cortisone shot and the pain came back?
Happens a lot. Cortisone calms inflammation. It does not change what caused the inflammation in the first place. When the pain returns, the shoulder needs a deeper plan, not another shot. We look at what is missing and build from there.
