OVERVIEW
ABOUT TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS
Trigger point injections are used for muscle knots that refuse to relax. The kind you can feel with your hand, sore, tight, always there. For some people, it feels like a cramp that never lets up. For others, it is more of a lump that aches and sends pain into the neck, shoulder, or even down the back. Stretching does not fix it. Massage helps for a little while, then the knot comes back. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of East Mesa, AZ, injections are one way to calm those stubborn spots. A small needle goes into the knot itself. The muscle may twitch, then soften. Sometimes relief is quick, sometimes it takes a few days. Most patients notice that movement feels easier once the tension fades. For longer results, therapy or exercises are often added so the knot does not just return.
BOOKING APPOINTMENTS
Appointments can be set up by phone or online. Staff in East Mesa explain what the injection involves and answer questions so you walk in knowing what will happen.

Most people need more than one injection. A lot of the time, they are spaced out over weeks, so the muscle has a chance to stay relaxed instead of tightening back up.
DIAGNOSE
EXAM & IMAGING
The first visit is an evaluation. The therapist checks where the knots are, which ones are painful, and whether injections are the right step.
TREATMENTS
CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM
A fine needle is placed into the knot with a small dose of medication. The muscle relaxes. For some, pain drops immediately. For others, it takes a bit longer.
FOLLOW UP
WE CALL TO CHECK IN
Follow-ups are important. They let the therapist see how your body responded, change the plan if needed, and add exercises so the progress holds.

Eric and his staff were awesome. I'm 71 years old and still very athletic. They did a fantastic job getting me back to the sports I love. I think they are the best physical therapy place in Phoenix

These people are wonderful. I had A fall down some stairs and had trouble with movement in my right knee. Hey they did a complete evaluation and then came up with a plan that worked me hard enough for progress but didn’t leave me sore. I started being able to bend my knee 90 degrees and after five weeks we were at 115 degrees! I highly recommend their friendly knowledgeable staff.

Answering Your Questions
What exactly is a trigger point?
It is a knot of muscle fibers that stays contracted and tender. Some are small, others feel like a tight band under the skin. They often limit motion or send pain into nearby areas.
Do injections really work better than stretching?
For stubborn knots, yes. Stretching helps mild tightness, but trigger points often need more. The injection interrupts the contraction and gives the muscle a reset.
Does the injection itself hurt?
Most patients say it is only a quick pinch, less than they expected. Any soreness after is mild and usually fades within a day or two.
How fast does relief come?
Sometimes it is almost immediate. Other times, it improves slowly over a few days. Lasting results often come once therapy and exercises are combined with injections.
Are injections safe for older adults?
Yes. The amount of medication is small and the needle is thin. At our East Mesa clinic, injections are done carefully and adjusted to keep patients safe, as this is our number one concern.
"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."
