What is Movement Limitation?

Most people don’t measure their range of motion. They notice what they can’t do anymore. They can’t turn their head fully when backing out of the driveway. Reaching overhead feels pinchy. Getting up from the floor takes planning. They avoid deep squats because the knees or hips feel blocked. Some can’t straighten an elbow after a flare. Others can’t rotate the trunk without the lower back complaining. The limitation often feels like a hard stop.

Why Do Joints Get Stiff?

Stiff joints usually develop from a mix of time and behavior. If you sit a lot, your hips can lose extension and rotation. If you work at a desk, the upper back can get rigid, and the neck does extra work. After an injury, swelling and guarding can limit motion. Even after pain improves, people keep moving differently, and the stiffness stays. Arthritis changes can also reduce joint glide and increase the sense of restriction. In other cases, the joint isn’t the only issue. Tight muscles, irritated tendons, and protective bracing can make a joint feel stiff even when the joint surfaces look fine.

How Stiffness Can Spread

One stiff joint often creates problems in another area. If the ankles don’t move well, the knees take more load. If the hips don’t rotate, the lower back twists more. If the upper back is rigid, the neck and shoulders work harder. That’s why people feel “tight everywhere” even when the original problem started in one place. The body finds a way around the restriction.

What PT Does to Restore Motion

PT focuses on changing the reason motion is limited. Sometimes that means joint mobilization and hands-on work to improve joint glide. Sometimes it’s soft tissue work to reduce guarding. Often it’s both, paired with specific exercises so the motion actually sticks. We also look at the movement habits that keep stiffness in place. If you sit all day and never open the hips, the joint will keep tightening, no matter how much stretching you do once a week. The plan has to fit your lifestyle.

PT Options That Often Bring the Best Relief

The “best” approach depends on the joint and the cause, but these tools show up often because they work well in real clinic settings:

  • Manual therapy to reduce stiffness and improve joint movement
  • Mobility training that targets the exact motion you’re missing
  • Strength work to support the joint through its new range
  • Posture and movement coaching for daily tasks and work positions
  • Balance and control drills when stiffness affects stability
  • A short home routine that’s realistic and repeatable
