OVERVIEW

ABOUT PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR KNEE ARTHRITIS

Knee arthritis changes the math on ordinary things. Stairs become a decision. You eye the distance from the car to the store. The first few steps after sitting are always the worst. The ache is part of it, but the stiffness is its own problem, the way the joint seizes up after rest and slowly thaws once you get moving. People figure arthritis just means waiting it out until a knee replacement someday. For most, that day is years off or never comes. Our physical therapists work the muscles around the knee so they carry more of the load, ease back the range the stiffness has stolen, and keep the joint moving in ways that calm it. Every knee is at a different stage, so every plan is too. The goal stays grounded. A knee that gets you through your day and stops calling all the shots.

An arthritic knee doesn't loosen up overnight. At our Gilbert clinic, therapy is spaced across several weeks, giving the joint and the muscles around it time to change at a pace that lasts.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

Therapists check how far the knee bends, what's tight or weak around it, and which movements set off the pain. That first read keeps the plan built around your knee instead of a generic routine.

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

Care might mean strengthening the muscles around the joint, hands-on work to free up range, or guided movement at Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Gilbert, AZ. The plan shifts as the knee loosens and gets stronger.

This is our go to place for all physical therapy! We have been coming here for at least 3 years now for my daughter’s sports injuries from dance. They also do imaging so it is a 1 stop clinic. We have been very pleased with the results but what’s set them apart is the staff. They take their time to explain everything to you, take their time with the therapy and treat you like family. We highly recommend them to everyone we know!

Anyone looking for a PT team look no further. I had an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery mid-September. Physical Therapy was recommended after week 4 post surgery. My journey to find the right fit began and ended at Modern Physical Therapy in Gilbert. I was looking for a ‘team’ that would partner with me so I would receive the best, safest and most effective care/results possible knowing that my recovery would not be easy or a quick fix. My treatments began the beginning of October with Ben and Drey who are great listeners, are extremely accomplished with all types of needs and have been an amazing part of my team. Equally as important are the girls who are at the front desk. The girls are first to welcome you, accommodate your schedules while making appts, and answer any questions you may have with insurance etc. I highly recommend Modern PT and their entire team!!

Modern PT is excellent. They are very supportive and really do a good job with therapy. The whole staff is very kind. They take 1 hour and run on time which I really like. I appreciate their treatments. I feel much better after a hard surgery.

What Are You Experiencing?

Most people don’t come in knowing exactly what treatment they need. What they do know is that something hurts. That’s all we need to start. Fill out this quick form and just tell us how your pain feels. Once we read through it, we’ll give you a call to talk about what might be causing it and what we can do to help.

SEVERE PAIN

If your pain feels unbearable or you can’t think straight, please don’t wait; call 911 or head to the hospital right away. Get the urgent care first. Once you’re safe, we’ll be here to help with the next steps.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

This is the kind of pain that doesn’t stop you completely, but it makes every day harder. Maybe it’s sharp. Maybe it’s dull and won’t let up. Write down what it feels like. We’ll go over it with you and start figuring out what’s behind it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Even the small stuff matters. A stiff back in the morning, sore joints after work, or little aches that keep showing up are all worth paying attention to. Tell us what you’ve been noticing, and we’ll help you stay on top of it before it gets worse.

Answering Your Questions

Can physical therapy really help arthritis, or does it just delay surgery?

It does real work, not just stalling. Strengthening the muscles around the knee takes load off the worn surfaces, which eases pain and improves how the joint moves. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Gilbert, AZ, the aim is to get the most out of the knee you have.

Won't exercising make my arthritic knee worse?

It's a common worry, but the right exercise tends to help. The trick is matching the movement to your knee. Gentle, joint-friendly work keeps the cartilage fed and the muscles strong without overloading things. Pushing the wrong way can aggravate it, which is why a guided plan beats guessing.

Why is my knee so stiff in the morning?

Arthritic joints set up when they've been still, so mornings and long sitting spells are usually the worst. The fluid that keeps the knee moving smoothly drops off with rest. A bit of gentle motion before you're up and around often takes the edge off.

What kind of exercises will I actually do?

Mostly strengthening for the muscles that support the knee, especially the quads and hips, plus range-of-motion work for the stiffness. Low-impact options like cycling or pool work come up often, too. At our Gilbert clinic, the mix gets built around your stage and what your knee tolerates.

How soon might I notice a difference?

It varies with how far the arthritis has gone and how consistent you are. Some people feel less stiffness within a few weeks. Building real strength takes longer, but that's the part that holds the relief in place.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
