OVERVIEW

ABOUT CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

Carpal tunnel is a nerve getting squeezed in your wrist, and it tends to speak up in small, easy-to-miss ways at first. Your thumb and fingers go numb while you're gripping a golf club. Your hand tingles doing up a shirt button. You wake up needing to shake the pins and needles out. That's the median nerve, which runs feeling to your thumb and most of your fingers, getting pinched as it passes through a narrow tunnel in the wrist. Left alone, the tingling usually turns to numbness, then weakness, then dropping your keys and struggling with a jar lid. Here's the part that matters. The early stage, the one that's easy to write off, is exactly the stage that responds best without surgery. The longer it runs, the harder it is to walk back. We figure out what's crowding the nerve and work to take the pressure off, mostly through conservative care. Caught early enough, that often settles the whole thing without an operating room in the picture.

Carpal tunnel usually takes more than one visit to settle. At Modern Medicine of Oro Valley, AZ, care runs across several weeks, so the nerve calms at a pace that holds.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We check your symptoms, test the nerve and your grip, and look at what's aggravating it. That read pins down how far along it is and what will help.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

Care might mean night splinting, nerve glide work, activity changes, or hands-on therapy, and the plan shifts as the nerve settles. We match the approach to the stage you're at.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

What Are You Experiencing?

Most people know something is off before they know what to call it. Just describe what daily life actually feels like right now and the team will follow up, talk through what might be driving it, and discuss what a realistic path looks like.

  LOW  HIGH

SEVERE PAIN

Sudden and extreme pain that is stopping you from functioning needs immediate attention. Call 911 or go straight to a hospital. Only once the situation is handled can the team help with what recovery looks like after.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

Pain that gets in the way without completely shutting the day down. Builds through a long shift, shows up during certain movements, or just sits there in the background. Share what is going on and the team will work through what is likely behind it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Do you have a hip that tightens up on longer hikes but feels fine otherwise? A wrist that aches after racket sports and takes a day to settle? These so-called “minor” issues can start off small, and then become bigger when left unaddressed.

Answering Your Questions

Why does it wake me up at night?

A lot of people sleep with their wrists curled under, which crowds the tunnel and presses on the nerve for hours. That's why waking up with a numb, tingling hand is such a common early sign. A simple night splint that holds the wrist straight often helps quickly, and it's usually one of the first things we try.

Can it clear up without surgery?
Often, yes, especially caught early. Splinting, activity tweaks, nerve glides, and easing the surrounding tightness relieve a lot of early and moderate cases. Surgery mainly enters the picture for advanced ones with constant numbness or muscle weakness that conservative care hasn't turned around.
Is typing to blame?

Typing can play a part, but it's rarely the whole story. Any repeated hand and wrist use, awkward wrist angles, or swelling in the area can crowd the nerve. We look at your specific activities and positions to find what's actually aggravating it.

How do I know it's getting worse?

Watch for numbness that's constant instead of occasional, weakness in the hand, dropping things, or trouble with fine tasks like buttons. Those point to the nerve being more affected, and they're a reason to get seen sooner rather than later.

Will I have to quit whatever's causing it?

Usually not quit, just adjust. Small changes to how you hold your wrist, how often you break, or how your workspace is set up can take real pressure off the nerve without giving up the activity.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
