OVERVIEW

ABOUT FROZEN SHOULDER TREATMENT

Frozen shoulder is one of those problems where doing nothing actually makes it worse. It sneaks in without any real cause, no fall, no obvious injury, and your gut reaction is to quit using the arm because it hurts. Trouble is, that's exactly what lets the joint clamp down tighter.

What's going on is the capsule around your shoulder thickening and stiffening, with scar-like tissue pulling the whole thing snug. Doctors call it adhesive capsulitis. The upshot is a shoulder that slowly loses motion until reaching a high shelf or fastening a seatbelt turns into a genuine chore.

The care you receive really does make a difference. It shortens the road and protects the motion you've still got. At Modern Medicine of Oro Valley, AZ, we match the treatment to your stage and work your range back without stirring things up.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We check how the shoulder moves, both on your own and when we move it, since frozen shoulder has a telltale pattern. Imaging helps rule out other causes.

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

We match care to your phase, using hands-on work, stretching, and range-of-motion exercises to loosen the capsule and win back motion.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

What Are You Experiencing?

Most people know something is off before they know what to call it. Just describe what daily life actually feels like right now and the team will follow up, talk through what might be driving it, and discuss what a realistic path looks like.

  LOW  HIGH

SEVERE PAIN

Sudden and extreme pain that is stopping you from functioning needs immediate attention. Call 911 or go straight to a hospital. Only once the situation is handled can the team help with what recovery looks like after.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

Pain that gets in the way without completely shutting the day down. Builds through a long shift, shows up during certain movements, or just sits there in the background. Share what is going on and the team will work through what is likely behind it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Do you have a hip that tightens up on longer hikes but feels fine otherwise? A wrist that aches after racket sports and takes a day to settle? These so-called “minor” issues can start off small, and then become bigger when left unaddressed.

Answering Your Questions

How long does frozen shoulder actually last?

It's all over the map, but usually a long haul, often many months to get through the phases. Care won't flip a switch, but it shortens the road and helps you keep more motion than you'd hang onto by riding it out.

Why did this happen with no injury?
That's the maddening part. A lot of the time there's no clear trigger. It tends to show up after a stretch of not using the arm much, and it's more common in people over forty, in women, and in folks with diabetes or thyroid trouble. Sometimes it just happens.
Should I push hard to force it loose?

Not in that early, painful phase. Forcing it then usually just flares it up and sets you back. We match how hard we push to where you are, and we don't get aggressive with the stretching until the pain has calmed down.

Can it happen in the other shoulder later?

It can. Usually not both at once, but once you've had it in one shoulder, the odds tick up for the other down the line. We keep an eye on that and give you ways to keep the joint moving, so if it starts, you catch it early.

Does an injection help move things along?

For some people, yeah. A cortisone shot during the painful phase can settle things enough that you move and stretch better in therapy. It's not right for everyone, so we talk through whether it fits you and where you are in the phases.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
