OVERVIEW

ABOUT KNEE PAIN TREATMENT

Knee pain comes in a lot of forms. For some people, it’s a dull ache that shows up after a round of golf or a long walk. For others it’s a sharp pain on the stairs, swelling that won’t go down, or a knee that clicks and catches when they squat. Sometimes it’s arthritis. Sometimes it’s a meniscus tear from twisting the wrong way, or a kneecap that doesn’t track quite right. It can also be an old soccer injury that’s been quietly bugging you for years. Very often the hips and thighs are part of the problem, because when those muscles are weak, the knee takes the hit. We almost always start with hands-on care and exercise, and that’s enough for most people.

BOOKING APPOINTMENTS

Call our office or fill out the form on our website. We’ll get back to you and find a time to come in. If you’ve had X-rays or an MRI of your knee, bring them along.

SCHEDULE

REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT

Just tell us when you’re usually free. A sore knee is easier to treat early, so we’ll try to fit you in soon.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

Tell us when it hurts, whether that’s on stairs, getting out of a low chair, or kneeling in the garden. We’ll bend the knee, test your leg strength, and have you do a few squats so we can see how it moves. If a tear seems likely, we’ll talk about imaging.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

Most plans focus on building strength in your thighs and hips so the knee doesn’t take all the load. We add stretches for tight muscles and hands-on work to help the joint move better. Depending on the cause, a brace or an injection might be part of it too.

FOLLOW UP

WE CALL TO CHECK IN

We’ll check your progress at each visit and make the exercises harder as your knee gets stronger. When you’re ready, we’ll help you get back to the walks, hikes, or sports you’ve been missing.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

What Are You Experiencing?

Most people know something is off before they know what to call it. Just describe what daily life actually feels like right now and the team will follow up, talk through what might be driving it, and discuss what a realistic path looks like.

SEVERE PAIN

Sudden and extreme pain that is stopping you from functioning needs immediate attention. Call 911 or go straight to a hospital. Only once the situation is handled can the team help with what recovery looks like after.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

Pain that gets in the way without completely shutting the day down. Builds through a long shift, shows up during certain movements, or just sits there in the background. Share what is going on and the team will work through what is likely behind it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Do you have a hip that tightens up on longer hikes but feels fine otherwise? A wrist that aches after racket sports and takes a day to settle? These so-called “minor” issues can start off small, and then become bigger when left unaddressed.

Answering Your Questions

Why does my knee hurt more going down stairs than up?

Going downstairs, your thigh muscle has to work hard to slow you down, and the kneecap gets pressed into the joint. If those muscles are weak, it hurts. Strengthening them is usually one of the first things we work on.

My knee clicks. Is that bad?

A lot of knees click and it doesn’t mean anything. If the click comes with pain, swelling, or a feeling that the knee locks up, that’s different. We’d want to take a look.

Should I wear a knee brace?

Sometimes it helps, depending on what’s going on. A brace can give support while you heal, but it doesn’t make the muscles stronger. We’ll let you know if one makes sense for you.

Can I keep exercising with a sore knee?

For most people, yes. A swim or an easy bike ride is often kinder to the knee than sitting still all day. If a workout leaves the knee puffy or a lot more sore the next morning, ease up and let us know.

Do I need an MRI before I come in?

No. Most knee problems can be figured out with a good exam. If we think an MRI will change the plan, we’ll order one after we see you.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN PHYSICAL THERAPY & SPORTS MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
