OVERVIEW
ABOUT ROTATOR CUFF TREATMENT
"Rotator cuff" gets used as if it names one condition. It doesn't. It covers everything from mild tendon irritation to a tendon torn clean through, and the treatment at those two ends looks nothing alike.
The cuff itself is a group of four muscles and their tendons wrapped around the top of your shoulder. Their job is keeping the ball of the joint centered in its socket while you lift, reach, and rotate the arm. When part of that system gets irritated or damaged, the control slips, and ordinary reaching turns weak and painful.
The complaints are recognizable. Weakness lifting overhead. An ache running down the outside of the arm. And that reliable stab of pain the moment you lie on that side at night, which is what finally brings most people in.
Here's the encouraging part. Irritation and partial tears, which make up a large share of cuff problems, usually rebuild without surgery. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Oro Valley, AZ, we figure out exactly what you're dealing with and build the plan from there.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

What Are You Experiencing?
Most people know something is off before they know what to call it. Just describe what daily life actually feels like right now and the team will follow up, talk through what might be driving it, and discuss what a realistic path looks like.
LOW HIGH
SEVERE PAIN
Sudden and extreme pain that is stopping you from functioning needs immediate attention. Call 911 or go straight to a hospital. Only once the situation is handled can the team help with what recovery looks like after.
MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT
Pain that gets in the way without completely shutting the day down. Builds through a long shift, shows up during certain movements, or just sits there in the background. Share what is going on and the team will work through what is likely behind it.
MINOR PAINS & ACHES
Do you have a hip that tightens up on longer hikes but feels fine otherwise? A wrist that aches after racket sports and takes a day to settle? These so-called “minor” issues can start off small, and then become bigger when left unaddressed.

Answering Your Questions
How do I know if mine is torn or just irritated?
Hard to tell on your own, since both ache and feel weak. A tear tends to bring weakness that persists and doesn't shake off after a few days of rest. Testing tells us a lot, and imaging confirms it when needed.
Do all tears need to be repaired?
No. Smaller and partial tears often do well with therapy that strengthens the surrounding muscles. Surgery is mainly for larger tears, or ones that haven't improved after a genuine course of conservative care.
Why is the pain so much worse at night?
Lying on that side compresses the injured tendons, and there's nothing else competing for your attention once the lights are off. It's the single most common complaint people bring in.
Can therapy help if I'm not having surgery?
Often substantially. Much of cuff pain comes from the muscles firing poorly and the shoulder blade not doing its job, which overloads the tendons. Fixing how the shoulder moves takes the strain off.
How long until I can use my arm normally?
Milder cases turn a corner in a few weeks. Partial tears and stubborn irritation take longer and need steady strengthening. The people who keep up the home program get there noticeably faster.
"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."
