OVERVIEW

ABOUT SCIATICA TREATMENT

Sciatica has a way of making people fear the worst. Pain firing from your back down through your leg feels serious, and the word "nerve" sends most minds straight toward surgery. The reality is considerably more reassuring.

Start with what it actually is. Sciatica is a description. The sciatic nerve runs from your lower back, through the buttock, and down the back of your leg. Irritate it anywhere on that route and the pain radiates along the entire length, which is why a problem in your spine shows up as burning in your calf.

People describe it differently. Sharp electric jolts for some, a steady burn for others, and plenty get numbness or pins and needles rather than pain. Nearly everyone says sitting makes it worse.

What's bothering the nerve varies too. A disc pressing on the nerve root, narrowing in the spine, or a tight muscle deep in the buttock crowding it. Each calls for a somewhat different approach. At Modern Medicine of Oro Valley, AZ, we find the source and settle it, and most people never need surgery.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We ask what brings it on and what eases it, test your movement, strength, and reflexes, and find which positions reproduce your symptoms. Imaging comes in when it'll change the plan.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

We take pressure off the nerve with targeted movement and hands-on work, then build the core and hip strength that keeps your back from loading it again.

WE CALL TO CHECK IN

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

What Are You Experiencing?

Most people know something is off before they know what to call it. Just describe what daily life actually feels like right now and the team will follow up, talk through what might be driving it, and discuss what a realistic path looks like.

SEVERE PAIN

Sudden and extreme pain that is stopping you from functioning needs immediate attention. Call 911 or go straight to a hospital. Only once the situation is handled can the team help with what recovery looks like after.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

Pain that gets in the way without completely shutting the day down. Builds through a long shift, shows up during certain movements, or just sits there in the background. Share what is going on and the team will work through what is likely behind it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Do you have a hip that tightens up on longer hikes but feels fine otherwise? A wrist that aches after racket sports and takes a day to settle? These so-called “minor” issues can start off small, and then become bigger when left unaddressed.

Answering Your Questions

Is sciatica a disc problem?

Sometimes, but not always. A disc pressing on the nerve root is one common cause, and so is narrowing in the spine or a tight muscle in the buttock crowding the nerve. Sorting out which one you have shapes the treatment.

Why does one particular stretch help some people and not others?
Because different causes respond to different directions of movement. The stretch that relieves a disc-related case can aggravate someone whose nerve is being crowded elsewhere. It's worth getting guidance rather than experimenting.
Can I still work out with sciatica?

Usually yes, with direction on what and how much. Lying still gets you through a few bad days and then leaves you weaker, which makes the next flare easier to trigger.

What symptoms should I call about right away?

Real weakness in the leg or foot, like your foot catching when you walk, or any change in bladder or bowel control. Numbness and tingling on their own are common and usually not alarming.

Why does mine keep coming back?

Because episodes often settle on their own while the cause stays in place. A weak core, poor lifting mechanics, or long hours sitting badly will set up the next one. Addressing that is what makes relief last.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
