OVERVIEW

ABOUT POST-OP REHAB

Recovery after surgery is rarely dramatic. It’s more like a bunch of little moments that make you stop and think. You get up from the couch and feel stiff. You take a short walk and feel okay, then later your joint looks puffy and you start questioning the walk. You try to carry something light and realize you’re moving like you’re made of glass. Most people don’t say “I’m in terrible pain.” They say, “I don’t trust it yet.” Post-op rehab gives you a steady path back. We work on swelling, getting motion back safely, and rebuilding strength that disappears fast when you baby one side. We also pay attention to the habits that sneak in when you’re protecting the area, like a small limp, a lean, a turned-out foot, or holding your breath when you stand. Those habits can become the reason your back, hips, or neck start hurting even though the surgery site is healing.

BOOKING APPOINTMENTS

Call Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Tucson, AZ, to book your first visit. We’ll ask what surgery you had and when it happened, then tell you what to bring and what the first visit usually looks like.

Early on, we tend to check in more often because stiffness and swelling can change quickly. Once your motion is steadier and your home plan is working, visits usually spread out.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We start by reviewing your surgeon’s restrictions and your current symptoms. Then we check swelling, motion, and how you move during basics like walking, stairs, and standing from a chair.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

Treatment starts simple and specific. We use gentle motion, light strengthening, and coaching for everyday situations, stairs, car transfers, and sleep positions. As your restrictions change, we build strength and control so you can move without relying on workarounds.

FOLLOW UP

WE CALL TO CHECK IN

We look at how you feel later that day and the next morning. If a busier day leads to swelling or a drop in motion, we adjust pacing and your home plan. When you recover well between visits, we progress you.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

What Are You Experiencing?

You don’t have to have it all figured out by yourself. Most people just know that it hurts, not how to fix it. That’s enough. Fill out this simple form and let us know in your own words how it’s hurting. We’ll take a look and then give you a call in order to take you through what may be happening and how we may be able to help.

SEVERE PAIN

If your pain is severe and you cannot manage it, don’t wait. Call 911 or come directly to your local hospital. Attend to the emergency first. When you are in a place of safety and ready, we will have follow-up care and recovery available.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

This type of pain will interfere with daily life. Sometimes it’s a sharp, aching type, sometimes it’ll just be a dull sensation. Either way, however, it’s a good idea to pay attention to it. Take note of how it feels, and we can go from there in figuring out what’s going on.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Even tiny aches add up. That sore back, muscle pains, or that pesky hurt you keep postponing do matter and could ruin your day. Let us in on what you’ve noticed, and we’ll collaborate to keep things from escalating.

Answering Your Questions

What do you mean by “safe motion” after surgery?

It means moving in ways that match your restrictions and protect the repair. We’re not trying to stretch through pain or force range on day one. We’re trying to keep you from getting stuck while still respecting healing.

Why am I sore in places that weren’t operated on?

You start borrowing movement from other areas without thinking. If you limp or lean, your back and opposite hip pick up extra work. If you guard a shoulder, your neck may tighten. Rehab helps clean that up early so you don’t end up chasing new pain.

If I feel better, why can’t I just do more?
Pain often improves before strength and control return. Tissue also heals on a timeline. Doing too much too soon can trigger swelling and stiffness that sets you back. We build up in steps so the next day isn’t a surprise.
What should I bring to the first visit?

Bring any post-op instructions you have, plus any brace or sling you’re using. Wear shoes you can walk in and clothes that make the area easy to access. If you don’t have paperwork, bring the surgery date and the procedure name.

What are red flags that need a call to the surgeon?

Call if you have new drainage, increasing redness or warmth, fever, calf pain with swelling, or a sudden change that feels out of proportion. Those aren’t normal ups and downs and hey need medical guidance.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
