OVERVIEW
ABOUT VESTIBULAR THERAPY
The room spins. You roll over in bed, and the ceiling slides sideways. You bend down, and the floor tips. That stomach-dropping, world-in-motion feeling has a name, vertigo, and it usually traces back to the balance system in your inner ear. Vestibular physical therapy is the care aimed right at that system. It treats vertigo, dizziness, and the unsteadiness that comes with them, and it works better than most people expect, because so much of this responds to the right targeted treatment. Our therapists figure out what type of vertigo you're dealing with, since the treatment hinges on that. For the most common kind, caused by tiny crystals slipping out of place in the inner ear, a specific sequence of guided head movements can settle the worst of it in a visit or two. For other types, the work is retraining your brain to handle signals from an inner ear that isn't reporting cleanly, through targeted exercises that steady you over time. The aim is the same either way.

Answering Your Questions
What actually causes the spinning?
Most vertigo starts in the inner ear, where the system that senses your head's position misfires and tells your brain the world is moving. The most common type comes from tiny crystals slipping out of place.
How fast can vestibular therapy help?
It depends on the type. The crystal-related kind often responds remarkably fast, sometimes settling the worst of it in one or two visits with guided repositioning. Other types take a few weeks of retraining. The evaluation gives you a realistic sense of your timeline.
Will the exercises make me dizzy?
Some of them might, briefly, and that's part of how they work. Carefully and safely challenging the system is what re-trains your brain to handle the faulty signals. The therapist keeps it controlled and builds up gradually, so it's manageable rather than overwhelming.
Is my dizziness definitely from my inner ear?
Not always, which is why the evaluation comes first. Some dizziness traces to blood pressure, medication, or other causes that vestibular therapy won't fix. The assessment confirms whether your symptoms are coming from the vestibular system before building a plan around it.
When is dizziness an emergency?
Vertigo paired with a sudden severe headache, slurred speech, weakness, numbness, or vision changes needs emergency care right away, not a therapy appointment. Those signs point to something other than the inner ear. Ordinary vertigo without those red flags is what vestibular therapy handles.
