OVERVIEW
Diagnostic ultrasound is used when pain does not show up on cue. Many people feel fine during an exam, then struggle during one very specific movement later that day. A knee tightens only when walking downhill. A shoulder feels normal until you reach into a cabinet. A foot starts aching after ten minutes on hard floors, then settles once you sit. These patterns are frustrating because nothing looks wrong when the body is still. Diagnostic ultrasound allows providers to look at muscles, tendons, ligaments, and joints while they are actually moving. Seeing tissue react in real time often explains why symptoms appear only during certain tasks and why they disappear so quickly afterward. It turns vague symptoms into something more concrete.
BOOKING APPOINTMENTS
If diagnostic ultrasound sounds like it could help explain what you are feeling, scheduling is simple. You can call the Mesa office or request an appointment online.

SCHEDULE
REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT
Ultrasound may be used during the first visit when answers are needed right away. In other cases, it is added later if progress slows or symptoms change. Timing depends on how your body is responding and what information is still missing.
DIAGNOSE
EXAM & IMAGING
Diagnostic ultrasound shows how soft tissue behaves during motion. Providers can watch a tendon handle load, see how a muscle fires, or observe how a joint moves through a painful range. Watching tissue under load often reveals details that other exams miss.
TREATMENTS
CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM
Clear findings lead to clearer care. When the involved tissue is identified, physical therapy plans become more specific. Exercises can target the right structure. Activity levels can be adjusted with more confidence. This often reduces frustration and shortens the cycle of guessing what might help.
FOLLOW UP
WE CALL TO CHECK IN
Ultrasound may be used again to compare changes over time. Tissue often starts moving better before pain fully settles. Seeing those improvements helps guide when to increase activity and when to hold steady. It adds reassurance that recovery is moving in the right direction.

I had awesome physical therapy at Modern PT. After tearing my bicep tendon, I needed help and I got it. It is easy to schedule appointments and always on time. Amber, scheduling, Taylor, PT and Nathan…

Modern Physical therapy helped me so much and I would recommend them to anyone who needs Physical therapy. I had a sharp pain in my right hip. The first visit, after having a detailed conversation and assessment, including an ultrasound to really see what the problem is, Brianne was able to focus on the exact area. I had 12 sessions and I am feeling so much better. My right hip doesn’t have the sharp pain it had previously. She gave me a home exercise program to continue doing on my own so I can continue strengthening the muscles I need to so this problem doesn’t happen again. The staff is so kind and friendly – I always felt comfortable there and cared about!

What Are You Experiencing?
Pain is difficult to articulate, and you don’t need to have the “right” words. Just tell us how you have been feeling it. Use the brief form to tell us in your own words like sharp, dull, or won’t stop. We will then contact you so that we can talk a little bit about what might be happening and how we may be able to help.
LOW HIGH
SEVERE PAIN
If the pain is intolerable, don’t wait. Call 911 or go straight to the hospital. Safety is foremost. Then, after addressing that, we’ll be able to assist you in the next steps toward comfort.
MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT
This kind of pain is not going to keep you from doing things, but it makes daily life difficult. Maybe it hits in bursts, maybe it is always there. Attribute it to the best of your ability. That’s all we need in order to start to understand what is happening.
MINOR PAINS & ACHES
Even small aches matter. That morning stiffness in your lower back, muscle aches in your legs after a day, or that pesky spot you’ve been ignoring. Those are things we want to talk about. Tell us what you’ve been feeling, and we’ll do our best to get ahead of it.

Answering Your Questions
Why would ultrasound help when pain feels random?
Pain often feels random because it only shows up during certain movements. Ultrasound helps capture what is happening in those moments instead of relying on how things look at rest.
Can ultrasound explain why pain shows up later, not right away?
Yes. Some tissues respond poorly to repeated load rather than one movement. Ultrasound can help show how tissue behaves as it is stressed, which explains delayed pain patterns.
Is ultrasound useful if I already had other imaging?
It can be. Older scans may not reflect how the tissue is functioning now. Ultrasound adds live information that helps explain current symptoms.
Will an ultrasound tell me exactly what to avoid?
It often helps clarify which movements or loads are irritating the tissue. This makes activity guidelines feel more specific instead of overly cautious.
What do most people feel after seeing the results?
Relief. Not because pain disappears right away, but because things finally make sense. When people understand what is happening, the plan feels clearer and easier to follow.
"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."
