OVERVIEW

ABOUT POST-OP REHAB

A lot of people expect recovery to be a straight line. It usually isn’t. You’ll have a day where walking feels smoother, then you wake up the next morning stiff again. You sit through dinner, and the first steps after feel rough. You do one extra errand, and swelling shows up later, which makes you wonder if you set yourself back. Post-op rehab helps you sort out what’s normal, what needs adjusting, and what should wait. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Mesa, AZ, we focus on swelling control, safe motion, and rebuilding strength so you can move without bracing for every step.

BOOKING APPOINTMENTS

Call Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Mesa, AZ to book your first visit or use the short form, and we’ll reach out. We’ll tell you what to bring, like your post-op paperwork, any brace or sling, and the restrictions your surgeon gave you.

SCHEDULE

REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT

In the early phase, we typically see you more often to keep motion from slipping and to manage swelling. As your movement steadies and your home routine becomes consistent, appointments usually spread out.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We start with your surgeon’s restrictions and your current symptoms so nothing is a guess. Then we check swelling, range of motion, muscle control, and basics like walking, stairs, and standing from a chair.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

Early rehab is about control and protection, not pushing hard. We use gentle motion, light strengthening, and practical coaching for stairs, car transfers, and sleep positions, then build up as your protocol allows. The goal is to move better in real life, not just get through a session.

FOLLOW UP

WE CALL TO CHECK IN

We pay attention to how you feel later that day and the next morning. If swelling spikes or motion drops after a busier day, we adjust pacing and your home plan. When you recover well between visits, we progress you.

This place is great! They offer ultrasound to diagnose. After my ultrasound they set me up with a plan to get better. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable! Highly recommend going here!

I had awesome physical therapy at Modern PT. After tearing my bicep tendon, I needed help and I got it. It is easy to schedule appointments and always on time. Amber, scheduling, Taylor, PT and Nathan…

Modern Physical therapy helped me so much and I would recommend them to anyone who needs Physical therapy. I had a sharp pain in my right hip. The first visit, after having a detailed conversation and assessment, including an ultrasound to really see what the problem is, Brianne was able to focus on the exact area. I had 12 sessions and I am feeling so much better. My right hip doesn’t have the sharp pain it had previously. She gave me a home exercise program to continue doing on my own so I can continue strengthening the muscles I need to so this problem doesn’t happen again. The staff is so kind and friendly – I always felt comfortable there and cared about!

What Are You Experiencing?

Pain is difficult to articulate, and you don’t need to have the “right” words. Just tell us how you have been feeling it. Use the brief form to tell us in your own words like sharp, dull, or won’t stop. We will then contact you so that we can talk a little bit about what might be happening and how we may be able to help.

SEVERE PAIN

If the pain is intolerable, don’t wait. Call 911 or go straight to the hospital. Safety is foremost. Then, after addressing that, we’ll be able to assist you in the next steps toward comfort.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

This kind of pain is not going to keep you from doing things, but it makes daily life difficult. Maybe it hits in bursts, maybe it is always there. Attribute it to the best of your ability. That’s all we need in order to start to understand what is happening.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Even small aches matter. That morning stiffness in your lower back, muscle aches in your legs after a day, or that pesky spot you’ve been ignoring. Those are things we want to talk about. Tell us what you’ve been feeling, and we’ll do our best to get ahead of it.

Answering Your Questions

What should I do if I feel “stuck” first thing in the morning?
Morning stiffness is common because swelling settles and tissues tighten overnight. Short, gentle movement usually helps more than trying to stretch aggressively. We’ll show you a simple warm-up routine that fits your restrictions so your first steps feel less miserable.
Is soreness after therapy a bad sign?
Not always. Mild soreness can happen when stiff tissue starts moving again and muscles begin working. A warning sign is soreness paired with swelling that keeps climbing or a big drop in motion that lasts more than a day or two. Tell us what you feel so we can adjust instead of guessing.
How do you help me get my balance back?
After surgery, balance can feel off because you’re guarding and weight-bearing changes. We start with stable drills, then progress to more real-life balance work as you’re allowed. The goal is to feel steady when you’re tired, not just for the first few steps.
What if I have a desk job but sitting makes me stiff?
Sitting tolerance is a real part of rehab, even for “light duty” jobs. We’ll work on positioning, movement breaks, and the right exercises so you can sit longer without locking up. A desk job can still flare symptoms if you stay still too long.
When do you start working on lifting and carrying again?
We start when your restrictions allow it. Early steps might be learning how to load the area without compensating, then building strength and endurance over time. We progress lifting and carrying in a controlled way so you don’t jump from “nothing” to “too much” overnight.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
