OVERVIEW
Some muscle pain just won't quit. You press on the spot and there it is, a tight, tender knot parked in your shoulder, your back, your neck. You stretch it. Dig at it. Lean it into a doorframe. Loosens for an hour, then locks right back up. Those knots have a name. Trigger points. And they're behind a lot of stubborn muscle pain, partly because they don't only hurt where they sit. They throw the ache somewhere else, too, so a knot in your upper back can send pain into your shoulder blade or up into your head. A trigger point injection puts a small amount of medication straight into that knot. The muscle releases, the spot quiets, and the pain it was radiating tends to ease with it. For pain that's deep and stubborn and out of reach of everything you've tried at home, it gets right to the source.

Relief sometimes takes more than one round. At our Northwest Tucson clinic, injections are spaced out sensibly, so the muscle has time to respond between sessions.
DIAGNOSE
EXAM & IMAGING
We find the trigger points by feel and check how your pain refers. That first step keeps the injections aimed at the knots actually driving it.
TREATMENTS
CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM
A thin needle delivers a small dose of medication into the trigger point at Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Northwest Tucson, AZ. The muscle releases and the pain eases.
FOLLOW UP
WE CALL TO CHECK IN
Check-ins keep the relief on track. At our Northwest Tucson clinic, we see how the muscle responded and pair the injections with movement work so it lasts.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

Answering Your Questions
What's the difference between this and dry needling?
The main one is what's in the needle. Dry needling uses a thin needle with nothing on it. A trigger point injection delivers a small amount of medication, often a local anesthetic, into the knot.
Does the injection hurt?
There's a quick pinch as the needle goes in, and the muscle sometimes gives a brief twitch or cramp that passes in a second. Most people find it very manageable. The medication tends to make the spot feel better fairly fast, and any soreness afterward usually fades within a day or two.
How soon will I feel relief?
It varies. Some people notice the knot let go and the pain drop within a day. Others need a session or two before it really settles. The injection eases the muscle, and the movement work that follows is what keeps it from tightening back up.
What kinds of pain do trigger point injections help with?
They work best on muscle pain driven by those tight knots. Long-running neck and shoulder tension, lower back pain with knots that refer into the hip, tension headaches tied to a tight neck, and stubborn spots that won't release no matter how much you stretch.
Is this a permanent fix?
On its own, usually not. The injection releases the knot, but if whatever caused it is still there, it can come back. That's why we pair it with strengthening and movement work. Sorting out the underlying cause is what makes the relief stick.
