OVERVIEW

ABOUT DRY NEEDLING

Some muscle pain digs in and won't budge. You find the spot, a tight, tender knot sitting in your shoulder or your calf or along your neck, and you go at it. Roll it, stretch it, press it into a doorframe. It eases for an hour, then it's right back. Those knots are trigger points, and they're behind a lot of stubborn muscle pain. Dry needling puts a thin needle straight into that knot, deeper than any thumb or foam roller reaches. The muscle gives a quick twitch, the band lets go, and the tightness and pain it was throwing off tend to settle. For deep, stubborn pain that's shrugged off everything you've tried at home, it gets right to the source. We figure out whether trigger points are driving yours, then go after them directly.

Loosening stubborn knots can take more than one session. At our Oro Valley clinic, visits are spaced out so the muscle has time to respond between rounds.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We find the trigger points by feel and check how your pain refers. That first step keeps the needling aimed at the knots actually driving it.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

A thin needle reaches the trigger point at its real depth at Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Oro Valley, AZ. The muscle twitches, then releases.

Office was very welcoming from the moment you walked into the office, Marissa and Kelsey were there to greet me. They know all of their patients and treat them like family. Dr. Dault was AMAZING. SHE listened and really searched to find the answers to my pain. Eric was very thorough when doing my ultrasound to diagnose my issue. Their recommendations helped me and in the end my pain decreased! Thank you to the entire team!

I was in a pretty dark place before starting at the Chandler location. My low back pain was completely debilitating and affecting the quality of my life for many years. I saw Phil once a week for 6 weeks and feel stronger and more confident than I have in many, many years. Phil explained the results of my MRI in great detail and answered my questions (as trivial as they might have been) with respect and understanding... I have been to many physical therapists before and the results I got here were the best. I highly recommend the Chandler location and will go back again if I ever need to!

Where do I start with the praise for this Team of miracle workers... I had suffered from chronic lower back pain for the last 8 years due to 32 years of golf and upper back pain due to 13 years of sitting at a desk. I utilized a chiropractor for the past 7 years but the pain ALWAYS came back and I NEVER got better. One visit with Dr. Josh and two X-rays showed the problem was stemming from my foot and a collapsing arch—which my previous chiropractor NEVER took the time to explore and diagnose.

What Are You Experiencing?

Most people know something is off before they know what to call it. Just describe what daily life actually feels like right now and the team will follow up, talk through what might be driving it, and discuss what a realistic path looks like.

  LOW  HIGH

SEVERE PAIN

Sudden and extreme pain that is stopping you from functioning needs immediate attention. Call 911 or go straight to a hospital. Only once the situation is handled can the team help with what recovery looks like after.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

Pain that gets in the way without completely shutting the day down. Builds through a long shift, shows up during certain movements, or just sits there in the background. Share what is going on and the team will work through what is likely behind it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Do you have a hip that tightens up on longer hikes but feels fine otherwise? A wrist that aches after racket sports and takes a day to settle? These so-called “minor” issues can start off small, and then become bigger when left unaddressed.

Answering Your Questions

Does dry needling hurt?

The needle is thin, so you often barely feel it go in. When it hits the knot, the muscle gives a quick twitch, a brief, deep cramp that passes in a second. Some soreness afterward is normal, similar to the day after a hard workout, and it clears in a day or two.

What's the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?
They use similar needles but come from different places. Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and energy meridians. Dry needling is based on muscle anatomy and targets trigger points directly.
What kind of pain does it help with?

It works best on muscle pain driven by trigger points. Long-running neck and shoulder tension, lower back pain with knots referring into the hip, tension headaches tied to a tight neck, and stubborn calf or hamstring tightness that won't stretch loose.

How soon will I feel a difference?

It varies. Some people feel the knot release and the area loosen the same day. Others need a couple of sessions before it really settles. The soreness right after fades quickly, and the looser, less painful feeling tends to follow.

Is it a permanent fix on its own?

Usually not by itself. The needling releases the knot, but if whatever created it is still there, it can come back. That's why we pair it with strengthening and movement work. Handling the underlying cause is what makes the relief stick.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams

WHY WE'RE DIFFERENT

CHOOSING THE MODERN WAY
