OVERVIEW

ABOUT CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

A little numbness in the fingers when you wake, a hand that goes dead while you're holding a book or gripping the wheel. You shake it out, it fades, you move on. But carpal tunnel rarely stays that mild. It comes from the median nerve getting pinched as it passes through a narrow tunnel in your wrist, and that nerve runs feeling to your thumb and most of your fingers. Squeeze it long enough and the tingling turns into numbness, then weakness, then dropping things and fumbling with buttons. Here's the part that matters most. The early stage, the one that's easy to ignore, is exactly the stage that responds best without surgery. The longer it goes, the harder it is to walk back. Our team figures out what's crowding the nerve and works to take the pressure off, usually with conservative care.

DJ at Modern Sports Medicine Physical Therapy and Orthopedics in Peoria, AZ is by far the best physical therapist I’ve worked with! He is extremely knowledgeable, professional, and clearly knows what he’s doing. His hands-on manipulation and manual therapy is over the top! I came from another physical therapy practice, and the care there wasn’t even close to the level I’ve received here. I’m very happy I made the switch and met DJ. Highly recommend him and this clinic. He is the best!!

I had a bad knee injury due to a sidewalk fall resulting in some major swelling, cuts and bruises and a slightly impacted meniscus tear. After seeing my PCP and having x-rays, I was directed to Physical Therapy. I searched several facilities and landed at Modern PT. I worked directly with DJ Repp for about 8 weeks and have to say DJ & his team are amazing. They were personable, and highly pro in all that they did in guiding the process to recovery. They work "together" with you according to a pace that you're comfortable with, while providing just enough challenge to keep you forward focused. I recovered so well under their great care. I would highly recommended this particular office at 83rd Ave & Cactus! in Peoria.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

Sometimes, pain may not bring you to your knees, but it still disrupts your daily life. Perhaps it’s intermittent and stabbing, or maybe it’s just present during the day. Let’s get those details from you, and we’ll do our best to determine what’s causing it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Little aches hurt just as badly. A sore shoulder, stiff knees, or a throbbing ache that shows itself every once in a while can still take its toll. Let us know how you’ve been doing, and we’ll take care of it for you before it grows into something bigger.

Answering Your Questions

Why does it wake me up at night?
A lot of people sleep with their wrists bent, which crowds the tunnel and presses on the nerve for hours at a stretch. That's why waking up with a numb, tingling hand is one of the earliest signs. A simple night splint that holds the wrist straight often helps right away, and it's usually one of the first things we try at Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Peoria, AZ.
Can it really clear up without surgery?
Often, yes, especially when it's caught early. Splinting, activity tweaks, nerve glides, and easing the tightness around the wrist relieve a lot of early and moderate cases. Surgery mainly enters the picture for advanced ones with constant numbness or muscle weakness that conservative care hasn't turned around.
Is my desk job causing it?
Desk work can play a part, but it's rarely the whole story. Any repeated hand and wrist use, awkward wrist angles, or swelling in the area can crowd the nerve. We look at your specific daily activities and positions to find what's actually aggravating it.
What tells me it's getting worse?
The signs to watch are numbness that's there all the time instead of now and then, weakness in the hand, dropping things, or struggling with fine tasks like buttons and zippers. Those point to the nerve being more affected, and they're a reason to get seen sooner.
Do I have to give up whatever's causing it?
Usually not give up, just adjust. Small changes to how you hold your wrist, how often you take a break, or how your workspace is set up can take real pressure off the nerve without dropping the activity altogether.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN PHYSICAL THERAPY & SPORTS MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
