OVERVIEW

ABOUT PHYSICAL THERAPY FOR TENDONITIS

A tendon doesn't heal the way you'd think, and that's where the frustration starts. Tendons don't get better by being left alone. They get better by being loaded. Carefully, the right way, at the right time. Our physical therapists at Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Peoria, AZ, start by figuring out which tendon is irritated and what's overloading it, because the strain usually comes from somewhere you wouldn't expect. Building the tendon back with controlled load, which is the one thing that actually pushes it to heal and toughen up. It's slow. Tendons get hardly any blood flow, so they take their sweet time. But done right, it ends the flare-and-rest cycle instead of just quieting things down until the next round.

A cranky tendon rarely settles in one go. At our Peoria clinic, therapy runs over several weeks, giving the tendon time to rebuild without getting pushed too hard.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

Therapists check the tendon, your strength, and what movements set off the pain. That first read keeps the plan aimed at your problem, not a generic routine.

The front office staff, especially Cheri is wonderful to work with and happy to help with your needs. The therapists there have a great team and attitude. They definitely want to see you succeed. Ian has a great bedside manner but really they all do. I would recommend them anytime.

Fantastic results for chronic sciatica after just 3 weeks. Everyone is kind, helpful and meets you where you are at. I’m so grateful to have found Modern PT.

Modern Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine exceeded my expectations. Being able to get the diagnosis through ultrasound on the first visit is so much more efficient in diagnosing and determining the treatment plan. It was amazing to be able to see the collaboration between Dr. Davies, PT Tim Moxie and Ryan with ultrasound. They are all very caring and I am currently receiving outstanding PT through Tim for shoulder pain. They offer additional treatment options as well. The office staff is flexible. I am recommending this office to friends and family.

What Are You Experiencing?

Pain is hard to put into words. You might not have a good sense of what kind of care you need, and that’s OK. What matters is how things are right now. Please fill out this short form to summarize how things are. We will then follow up and take you through what may be causing the pain, as well as what may work as a solution.

SEVERE PAIN

If the pain is severe such that you are unable to deal, don’t wait. Call 911 or go straight to a hospital. Safety is essential, no matter what. That initial action, after which we are able to lend a hand in helping you find longer-term relief.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

Sometimes, pain will keep you from being brought to your knees, but it does disrupt your ability to function in daily life. Perhaps it’s intermittent and stabbing, or maybe it’s just present during the day. Let’s get those details from you, and we’ll do our best to determine what’s causing it.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Little aches hurt just as badly. A sore shoulder, stiff knees, or a throbbing ache that shows itself every once in a while can still have its toll. Let us know how you’ve been doing, and we’ll take care of it for you before it grows into something bigger.

Answering Your Questions

How do I know if it's tendonitis or something worse, like a tear?

The pattern tells you a lot. Tendonitis usually aches with use, stiffens up after rest, and builds slowly. A tear tends to show up suddenly, with weakness, maybe a pop, or just not being able to do a movement at all. The evaluation at Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine of Peoria, AZ sorts out which one it is.

Is it safe to keep exercising with tendonitis?

Often, yeah, with some tweaks. Shutting everything down tends to leave the tendon weak. Blasting through full activity makes it worse. The sweet spot is loading it enough to drive healing without setting it off, and that line is exactly what a plan figures out for you.

Why does the same tendon keep flaring up?

Usually, because the cause was never dealt with. A cranky tendon is often paying for weakness or a movement quirk somewhere else. A weak hip behind an Achilles. A weak shoulder behind a sore elbow. Until that gets handled, the tendon keeps taking the hit.

What's eccentric exercise, and why does it come up so much?

It's the lowering part of a movement, done slowly and controlled. Like easing down from a heel raise. Eccentric loading has a strong track record with tendons because it builds them up in a way that helps them handle stress. It's often the centerpiece of tendon rehab.

How long before I can get back to my sport or activity?

Depends on the tendon and how long it's been cranky. Some settle in a few weeks. Stubborn ones take months. The return gets paced, building load until the tendon proves it can take the real thing, so you come back once instead of flaring all over again.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

Physical Therapy for Tendonitis

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
