OVERVIEW

ABOUT Orthopedic Exams

Orthopedic pain can be confusing. One day your knee feels fine, then stairs hurt. Your shoulder aches after sleep, then settles by lunch. You start guessing what is safe, and you stop doing things you used to do without thinking.

An orthopedic exam gives you clear answers. At Modern Medicine of Surprise, AZ, we use the exam to find what is driving your pain and what your body can handle right now. You leave with a plan that makes sense and steps you can start the same week.

BOOKING APPOINTMENTS

Call the clinic or schedule online. Wear comfortable clothes and bring any imaging reports or doctor notes you have. We start with a short talk, then we move into simple tests.

SCHEDULE

REQUEST AN APPOINTMENT

Most exams take one visit. If you need care after the exam, we set a plan that fits your symptoms and your schedule. Many people start with one or two visits per week for a short stretch.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We ask where it hurts, what sets it off, and what helps. We check range of motion, strength, and how you move through basic tasks. If pain travels, or you feel numbness or tingling, we also check nerve signs.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

If the exam shows you need rehab, we start with what you can tolerate that day. That may include guided mobility work, strength basics, and hands on care when it helps. You also get a short home plan so you are not waiting on the next visit to feel progress.

FOLLOW UP

WE CALL TO CHECK IN

Each follow up checks what changed since last time. We track pain, swelling, function, and the movements that still feel limited. Then we adjust the plan so you keep building without setting off a flare.

What Are You Experiencing?

You don’t need to know the exact name of what’s going on and most people don’t. What matters is how it feels to you. Use the short form to tell us, even if it’s just “my back hurts when I wake up” or “it feels like a sharp pinch.” Once we see it, we’ll give you a call to talk things over and figure out some next steps together.

SEVERE PAIN

If the pain is so bad you can’t think straight, please stop here and call 911 or go to the hospital. Getting safe is the first step. When you’re ready afterward, we’ll be here to talk about longer-term help.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

This kind of pain might not knock you down, but it makes life harder than it should be. Maybe it’s a stabbing pain when you move a certain way, or maybe it’s a dull ache that just won’t quit. Write it down as best you can. That’s all we need to get started.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Little things add up, too. A stiff neck, sore knees, or that nagging twinge you keep brushing off all matter. Share what you’ve been noticing, and we’ll help you keep it from becoming something bigger.

Answering Your Questions

Do I need imaging before an orthopedic exam?
Not always. A good exam can show a lot through movement and strength testing. If you already have imaging, bring it. If the exam suggests you need it, we will tell you why.
What should I wear to the appointment?
Wear clothes that let you move and let us see the joint. Shorts help for knee or ankle pain. A tank top helps for shoulder pain. If that is not possible, wear something loose.
Will the exam hurt?
It should not feel scary. Some tests may reproduce symptoms for a moment. We keep it controlled and we stop if it feels too sharp. The goal is clear answers, not a bad flare.
What if my pain comes and goes?
That is common. We look for the pattern and the trigger, not just today’s pain level. We may also ask what your “worst day” looks like so the plan matches real life.
What do I leave with after the exam?
You leave with a clear next step. That can be rehab visits, home exercises, activity changes, or a referral if we see something outside our lane. You should not walk out wondering what to do next.

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
