OVERVIEW

ABOUT POST-OP REHAB

Surgery closes one problem. It often opens a new set of questions. Can I put weight on it yet? Why does it feel stiff in the morning but looser at night? Why does a five-minute walk wipe me out? Post-op rehab helps you answer those questions with a plan. We work on swelling, stiffness, and the strength you lose fast when you guard an arm or leg. We also catch the “survival moves” people pick up without noticing, like limping so you can avoid bending, shifting all your weight to one side, or bracing your core and holding your breath when you stand. Those patterns can linger and turn into back pain, hip irritation, or a shoulder that never quite settles.

BOOKING APPOINTMENTS

Call or book online and choose post-op rehab. Bring your post-op paperwork if you have it. If you do not, bring the surgery date and the procedure name.

Most people do better with regular visits early so swelling and stiffness do not take over. Visits usually spread out once you can move well at home and recover cleanly after activity. Your plan depends on restrictions, healing phase, and how your body reacts between sessions.

DIAGNOSE

EXAM & IMAGING

We start with the rules from your surgeon, because post-op care is not the time to wing it. We check swelling, range of motion, muscle control, and the basics you rely on all day, walking, sitting to standing, and stairs.

TREATMENTS

CUSTOM TREATMENT PROGRAM

Treatment starts small for a reason. We use gentle movement work, light strengthening, and coaching for braces, slings, stairs, and daily set-ups so you stop compensating.

FOLLOW UP

WE CALL TO CHECK IN

We pay attention to what happens after you leave, not just what happens on the table. If you swell up after errands or a long car ride, we adjust the plan and talk pacing. If you recover well, we progress you and add the next step.

What Are You Experiencing?

You don’t need to know the exact name of what’s going on and most people don’t. What matters is how it feels to you. Use the short form to tell us, even if it’s just “my back hurts when I wake up” or “it feels like a sharp pinch.” Once we see it, we’ll give you a call to talk things over and figure out some next steps together.

  LOW  HIGH

SEVERE PAIN

If the pain is so bad you can’t think straight, please stop here and call 911 or go to the hospital. Getting safe is the first step. When you’re ready afterward, we’ll be here to talk about longer-term help.

MODERATE PAIN / DISCOMFORT

This kind of pain might not knock you down, but it makes life harder than it should be. Maybe it’s a stabbing pain when you move a certain way, or maybe it’s a dull ache that just won’t quit. Write it down as best you can. That’s all we need to get started.

MINOR PAINS & ACHES

Little things add up, too. A stiff neck, sore knees, or that nagging twinge you keep brushing off all matter. Share what you’ve been noticing, and we’ll help you keep it from becoming something bigger.

Answering Your Questions

When should I start rehab after surgery?
It depends on the procedure. Some surgeries need early movement to avoid stiffness. Others need a short protection window first. Follow your surgeon’s timeline, and if anything is unclear, bring your paperwork so we can match the plan to the protocol.
What happens during the first visit?
The first visit usually includes more checking than sweating. We review restrictions, look at swelling and motion, and watch how you move during simple tasks. You leave with a short home plan you can actually follow.
How do I know if I am doing too much at home?
Do not judge it by one tough afternoon. Look at the next day. If swelling keeps climbing, if pain wakes you up, or if motion stays worse for more than a day or two, you likely did too much. This often happens when you feel decent, clean the house, then pay for it all week.
Will therapy make me hurt more?
Some soreness is normal, especially early. Therapy should not feel sharp or alarming. If a session leaves you swollen and miserable the next day, we treat that as a cue to adjust, not something you should push through.
Why do I feel pain in other places, like my back or my opposite hip?
Your body covers for the weak link. Limping, leaning, or hiking a shoulder spreads the workload to other areas. That can show up as low back tightness, hip soreness, or neck tension, even if the surgery site feels “fine.”

"Our goal is to help you solve some of your most painful life experiences."

MODERN MEDICINE
CEO

"When an athlete gets injured, a team of doctors and therapists evaluates them, orders imaging, and decides the best path forward. If surgery is needed, they go straight to surgery; if not, they get condition-specific physical therapy and targeted injections to speed healing. This is the same process pro athletes use to get back on the field quickly—and at Modern, you can access that same level of care for the same cost as any other physical therapy clinic."   - Josh Adams
