ABOUT DRY NEEDLING

Dry needling is a treatment used for muscles that are stuck, no matter what. Patients have called it a knot that never heals despite stretching or massage. Others feel constant strain within their shoulder or back, or neck, that hinders movement. These stuck areas are often called trigger points and can cause movement to feel uncomfortable. At Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, our physical therapists use dry needling to loosen up those stuck areas. Using a thin, sterilized needle, the therapist places it gently within the muscle. It may twitch and then relax. Instant relief is experienced by some patients, and others show signs of improvement after a series of treatments. Dry needling is at times used concurrently with therapy exercises or stretching, so improvement can last longer. Results are straightforward: lessen pain, regain movement, and make movement comfortable once more.

This is our go to place for all physical therapy! We have been coming here for at least 3 years now for my daughter’s sports injuries from dance. They also do imaging so it is a 1 stop clinic. Anyone looking for a PT team look no further. I had an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery mid-September. Physical Therapy was recommended after week 4 post surgery. My journey to find the right fit began and ended at Modern Physical Therapy in Gilbert. What does dry needling feel like?

Most patients feel a flash of sharp stinging or muscle movement when the needle is inserted. Others feel a dull ache later, but it goes within a day. It doesn’t feel like a typical injection because the needle is so thin. While it can feel odd, the majority of patients find that the relief is worth it when considering the fleeting moment of discomfort.

How is dry needling different from stretching or massage?

Stretching and massage break up surface tension and relax muscles short term. Dry needling goes deeper into the muscle fibers and addresses refractory knots. By direct trigger point release, it can yield quicker relief.

How many treatments are usually needed?

Treatment varies based on what is being treated and the body’s reaction. Individual improvement may occur within a few sessions or require an extended series. Treatment is reassessed on a regular basis and tailored to what you need.

Can I stay active after treatment?

Yes. Most patients return to their usual activities right away. Light movement often helps the muscle stay loose. Staying active can also support faster recovery.

Is dry needling safe?

Yes. It is performed with sterile needles by trained professionals. The treatment is low risk and adjusted for each patient’s needs. Safety checks are part of every session.
