ABOUT TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS

Trigger point injections are prepared especially to loosen up persistent muscle knots that are unwilling to release. Each person has these knots differently. For some, it is a bolt of pain in the shoulder that runs along the arm. For others, it is a hump of the lower back that is stuck, knotted up, despite repeated stretching. Stretching, heat, and rest work for a limited time, but the strain comes back. Through Modern Physical Therapy & Sports Medicine, the injection is one method of calming down the muscle and loosening it up. Through a thin needle, a small dose of medication is deposited into the knotty area. Twitching and relaxation of the muscle ensue. Immediate relief is seen by some patients, while others do not feel a difference until after a day or so. Results tend to stick around longer when treatment or simple exercises are utilized along with the injection.

This is our go to place for all physical therapy! We have been coming here for at least 3 years now for my daughter’s sports injuries from dance. They also do imaging so it is a 1 stop clinic. Anyone looking for a PT team look no further. I had an Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) surgery mid-September. Physical Therapy was recommended after week 4 post surgery. My journey to find the right fit began and ended at Modern Physical Therapy in Gilbert. Answering Your Questions

What are trigger points?

Trigger points are bands of knotted muscle fibers that are contracted and are painful. They can limit movement or radiate pain into other areas and are common at the shoulder, back, or hip.

Do the injections hurt?

Each person is different, but most people will only experience a momentary pinch with very little soreness later. The relief will generally prevail over the temporary discomfort as movement will be easier and cause less pain.

How many treatments are required?

It will rely on the obstinacy of the knots. There are patients who will improve after some sessions and others who will require more. Each program is tailored individually.

Can you return to normal activities after an injection?

Yes. They tend to return to their activity shortly. Movement tends to be encouraged since it prevents the knot from coming back.

Is dry needling safe?

Yes. The procedure is completely safe as we use sterile needles, and it is performed by trained professionals. The treatment is low risk and adjusted for each patient’s needs.
